Perusing G-broker this evening, I noticed a cheaply priced C&H 375 2&1/4” NE rifle for sale, which prompted me to dig out the latest edition of “Cartridges of the World” and re-read the 375 NE info. The article claims that this round has poor headspace control. While I’ve never so much as held an example of one of these rounds in my hand, I can’t imagine headspace being a problem. Any users of this round have an informed opinion? “CoTW” contains many erroneous statements about cartridges, born out of ignorance. I wonder if this is another to add to the list?

I have experienced no headspace problems with my M/S 9.5X57. In fact, I did something with that rifle last January I had never done before: I inadvertently killed two deer with one shot.

I still don't know how it happened, but I was shooting at the larger of two does at about 100 yards range. At the shot, there was a whirlwind of movement from the four deer in the clearing, and when the dust settled, there was a deer on the ground, right where the one I had aimed at had been standing.

However, when I went to retrieve it, the doe turned out to be not the one I had aimed at, and there was a large blood trail leading off into the trees surrounding the field. A short search turned up the body of the deer I had aimed at.

The deer had been standing side by side in relation to me, and how the second deer was hit be the exiting bullet was and is a mystery to me. However, I did establish that the rifle and cartridge are more than adequate for white tail deer.
