. 308 Norma Magnum 07 October 2004, 11:46
mokiUp until 2 years ago my favorite 30 cal rifle was my 308 Norma Mag but after a few thousand high velocity loads my groups just didn't group the way they used to. So now my new favorite 30 Cal is the 300 Rem Ultra Mag in a s/s Rem 700 BDL synthetic stocked dream of a rifle.

How did that miss the list, you could have at least listed the 308 Norma as a close second.
I own three.

dSmith.45.300 Weatherby for me.
It's the fastest practical .30 mag, imho.
Practical to me means the following:
+ Does not require use of a muzzle break where as the RUM and .30-378 would (for me)
+ Can find factory ammo on a dealer's shelf ( 300 dakota and .30-378 not so much)
+ Will fit in "normal" magnum (.375 H&H sized) actions with either three or four cartridges in the magazine.
+ Has been around long enough to be established in the industry and does not appear to be going away anytime soon
In all practical purposes the Weatherby performs pretty much like the .300 Winchester in the field. There are some paper advantages in velocity and energy to the Wby over the Win Mag but in terms of actual game shooting they are close to identical. Had my father not owned a .300 Wby I would have, more then likely, chose the Win Mag as my fast thirty as it is a bit cheaper to purchase rifles & ammo. Also slightly cheaper to reload for. Besides I think the double radius shoulder of the Weatherby round looks "cool"

KYsquirrelsniperThe 300RUM for me, because it's the fastest 300mag that I can actually afford to shoot. Even though I reload, the brass for a 30-378 or Lazzeroni's Warbird are too expensive for my tastes.

You left the 30-06 Springfield off the list so I did not vote.
Yep, the venerable old 30-06 Magnum...
I know that not everyone likes magnums, but the question was not what is your favorite 30 caliber "anything", it was a question about magnums.

Sask_Hunterthe only one that i have shot.

300 ultra.

TC1I own a .300WinMag, .300RUM and a .300H&H out of the the 3 I think the H&H would be my favorite. The recoil is a little less than the other two. The only problem is you have to reload for it or you might as well be shooting a .30-06!

<9.3x62>I will never own another 300 mag, but if I did, I would consider only one - 300 H&H.

DufurI like my RUM but my 300 winchester mag is a close 2nd. The tang safety ruger 300 WM has more battle scars but lacks the perceived appeal that the RUM offers with its speed, thunderous roar, trajectory, and those tiny little groups on the target. They both do the job quite nicely.

CanadianLeftyI have only used the .300WSM with great results in both N.A. and Africa.
I am curious to hear more about the .300 Dakota or .300 win mag.

Jungli BainsI have a .300 Weatherby and a .300 Winchester both have been satisfactory. If you twist my arm I'll say ".300 Weatherby."

.300 RUM. I figured in buying my first .30 magnum, I was going to make it a MAGNUM. I have loaded some hot 30-06 loads(safe for my rifle) that can come pretty close to .300 Win mag performance(I said close not equal), but they can't come close to the RUM. MAny will say 200-300 ft. per second is nothing, but isn't that why you buy a magnum in the first place?

DocMy custom 300 RUM...Rem. BDL with a 28" Shilen #4.

My 300 WM was nice but I like the beltless mag better. It was much easier to get tight groups.

TomskyMy Tikka Master Allweather in 300 Winmag and some Hornady V-Max 110 grs bullets.

Thats the gun of my heart.

cobra300 Dakota.
23 February 2005, 02:14
AtkinsonI still use the 300 H&H, tried the rest but I liks that long neck and its ability to handle 200 and 220 gr. bullest..With these heavy bullets handloaded it will out perform all but the 300 WBY, another real nice cartridge...but all that said there is very little practical field difference in any of them, certainly not enough to argue about..

bigdogyotecaller,
I like Ray am partial to the 300 H&H, but I now have found the 308 Norma to be a tack driver and have the ability to do it all.
308 NORMA MAGGets my vote today

N E 450 No2I have actually taken more game with a 300 Weatherby Magnum. My current 300 is the Winchester Magnum. Haven't really been able to tell any difference in the field between the two.

safariIt's a toss us between the .300 Weatherby and the .300 Winchester. Both have thier advantages. But in the field I don't think the game will know the difference.

Love those sexy shoulders.

ZekeI never even considered a big magnumb until three weeks ago when Wally-World put a Howaby 300 Weatherby magnumb on the clearence rack for $299.
I couldn't resist and crossed over to the dark side immediately. I guess it would be a 300 Weatherby Magnumb.
