A New Cooper, Are they really Worth the Money?
I have a chance to buy a Cooper in 270Win from a friend in need and I wonder are they worth the normal retail price?

They are well built and accurate.

I've got a couple; a classic 30-06 and a Western Classic 7 mm STW. Up here the classic costs a few hundred more than a Sako and is easily worth the price.

The Western Classic in 7 mm STW ran me right around 4 grand, and whether it is worth it is certainly a matter of opinion. It delivers the accuracy guarantee, works perfectly and I can't find fault with it. Wood is very fine but not outstanding. My practical side would say probably not, but my gun nut side would say yes.

I have one in .25/06 and love it. IMO the standard calibers are worth the price, but there is a $1,000 premium for magnum calibers, and I haven't been able to make myself accept that. But I do want a .338 wm so badly...

i have just one and it's a nice piece, but if i'm going to spend what they want for them, i'll go the custom route instead

Thanks. This particular rifle is a Jackson custom with knurled bolt knob, barrel flutes, fancy sling studs and ridiculous wood. It set him back about 4K new and it just seemed to me you could build quite a rifle for that kind of cash. I do not know what to do with it. It is as new and it scares me to think of actually hunting with it. The factory target shows one hole for 3 shots, but I have learned that is shot at 40 yards. At least it is a functional chambering.

I bought two Sako 85s this summer. Sold them both and bought a Cooper. Nothing wrong with the Sako, but IMO, the Cooper is a step above. Accuracy is outstanding. The 1/2" guarantee is very much true with my gun. I have tried both TTSXs and Sierra Prohunters and they are damn accurate.

I own six Cooper rifles. Every one of them shoots half moa groups. If accuracy is important to you they are worth every penny.

IMHO, which I am entitled to: they are overpriced and a portion of the price tag went to obama in 2008 and again in 2012 by the alleged former owner.

Depends on how thoroughly opposed to any anti-hunting and anti-US Constitution groups or supporters you are.

Seems counter-productive for a gun manufacturer Confused

Let me start by saying I am Canadian AND I would not vote for Obama if you put a gun to my balls. Having said that, get real guys. Dan Cooper lost his marbles and made a personal donation. His B of D quickly realized he effectively sank the future of his company and bought him out of the company he started. In spite of Internet conspiracy theories, he is no longer associated with the company. It is owned by Wilson Firearms. But you guys know all this already, but yet you choose to bash/boycott an American company, which employs American workers, who spend their paycheques in America. It's cold up here, but my brain cells ain't frozen. This makes no sense. Cooper arguably makes the finest production rifle in America, but many would rather buy a Sako made in Finland, a Steyr or CZ made in Europe, or a Browning made in Japan. I don't follow your logic. Just sayin. Let the firestorm beginSmiler

As a staunch Republican and owner of 6 Cooper Rifles, I would say you nailed it - eh?

We own 8 Coopers in our house and are always looking for more. I try to buy used as the older models seem to have much nicer wood.

Fit, finish, and accuracy is superb. If I miss with one of my Coopers it is my fault and not the fault of the rifle. If an EX owner/employee of Cooper donated money to Obama I simply don't give a shit. It has nothing to do with the PRESENT day owners and employees.

IMHO, donating to O'Bamavitch was a wise biz decision. Gun sales have gone through the roof with a Socialist in the White House.

sns2, rationality has nothing to do with folks who eat their own, witness the boycott of Ruger, Smith and Wesson etc. Both of which seem to be doing quite nicely. I just wish they would boycott Freedom Arms, that way the prices would come down and I could buy several more!

I guess they are worth it if you have deep pockets, but I can buy 5 or 6 very nice, very accurate rifles from Savage and others for the price of one. In my book, no.

All depends what one wants to spend their money on for me they are not worth the price.

I saved my nickles and dimes about 7 years ago and bought a 57-M, in 22 lr. For small game, and just plain fun, it is my go to rifle.

I have three of them now and have only shot two of them so far. the 19-223 Calhoon shot a .277 group last week and the 223 shot a .38 group this weekend with factory ammo. They are a very nice gun in my opinion. Very well built, great triggers. I would guess most of the naysayers don't own one. I have other rifles, just like the coopers alot, i am sure i will be buying more of them. worth every penny, you get what you pay for

I've been wanting a cooper 54 Jackson in 7-08 myself. However, I have three Tikkas that all shoot .5 MOA. One is a Tikka 695 7Mag that i've had for 14 years, another is a T3 7mag that I wound up giving to my nephew, and the other T3 is a 7-08. Exceptional values for sure. So I'm trying to figure out what a Jackson will do that these Tikkas won't? I don't buy stuff to look at, or sit in the safe. They get used.

I have a Tikka 695 in 300WM. beautiful rifle and it SHOOTS!

Just like the decision to buy 6 Fiats or 1 Ferrari. They perform the same function, but the Ferrari or Cooper does it with class and brings pride of ownership.

Bad analogy. You can maintain all six Fiats for less than a tune-up on that Ferrari. Buying a Cooper, the cost to purchase should be about it. Still too much, tho.
