Alberta CanuckHow many of you guys were raised by
your parents and Lucian Cary?
I know I was. My parents gave me over to reading textbooks in the public schools, and the Bible in the Mennonite Bretheran church. Lucian Cary gave me the world of the outdoors and shooting...in his little paperback books "On Guns". He was the one who created the desire to read Keith, Jack O'C, Hemmingway, Corbett, Ruark and all the rest.

manhassetMy first shooting / guns periodical was "Gun & Shooting by Lucian Cary ". He was the Gun Editor of True Magazine and this book contained material reprinted from True The Men's Magazine from '46,thru '52. My two favorite stories that I read over and over were Buff Runner, about Col Frank Mayer, 102 yrs old and the last of the buffalo hunters and Marsh Williams, the man who designed the M-1 carbine. Really liked the way articles were written back then, clear and to the point. Nice of you to bring up Mr Cary as I have not heard about him in manny moons. I still have the above book and it brings back alot of memories of the outdoors with my Dad.
Thanks AC
Bob

gnoahhhMy favorite Lucian Carey stories are the ones he wove around the great barrel maker Harry M. Pope- the "J.M.Pyne" stories.
My marine father introduced me to shooting, hunting and the responsibilities that go with it. He was a sniper in the Pacific and i wish i had half his ability.

Alberta CanuckGoing to the Abe Books website and doing a search on the author's name (Lucian Cary) will introduce y'all to his books.
He is the only well-known gun author I am aware of who was a successful novelist long before he became a gun writer. Mr. Cary had a bestseller ("The Duke Steps Out") which was published in 1927 or so and became the basis for the 1929 movie of the same name, It was about a world lightweight boxing champion who then went to college incognito and fell in love there...etc. Its sequel was titled "The Duke Returns".
Jack O'C also tried his hand at being a novelist before becoming a gun writer, but was not what I would call successful at it.
Mr. Cary's "J.M. Pyne" series of annual articles appeared in at least 4 of the early years of The Gun Digest IIRC, and were all great tales of and for shooters.

craigsterI have the early Gun Digests with the J.M. Pyne stories and have read them more than a few times. My Dad subscribed to True Magazine and I vagely remember some of the stuff he wrote for them. IIRC the J. M. Pyne stories were originally published in Look Magazine.

I read his stuff at the school library, but I wouldn't say I was raised on him.

6mmmanI started reading O'Connor and Keith. Loved the ongoing controversy between the two. The others came with maturity. Corbett and John Taylor may be my favorites.
