CZ 550 FS 9.3x62
After much deliberation and thought I finally ordered a 9.3x62 CZ 550 fs, anyone have one? anybody shot one? I shot an older Lux model and was shocked at how mild it was for the power that it puts out. Any opinions in general? Thanks

The last gunshow I went to they had one NIB sitting on the table. It caused me much mental distress. I finally over came temptation and refused to go back to that side of the room for the rest of my time at the show. I see you weren't as strong willed as me roflmao

Very nice rifle. I wish I owned one.

Nframe - I own, load, and shoot a CZ550 American in the 9.3x63 caliber, as well as a few others on this forum. It's a great cartridge (in a great rifle) with about the same "felt" recoil as most "Whelens". It's easy to reload and pleasant to shoot, and there are many components becoming available for this "old" European caliber here in the U.S. I think of it as my ".36 whelen". You'll find some great "receipes" on this forum from Paul, BF, Steve R. and others. Congratulations on your purchase, you won't be sorry. Mags

My dealer tells me 2 weeks, I can't wait!! Load data is a little sparse so maybe someone could post a few recipe's for my use. I've ordered a box of 286 gr. Norma Alaskan's, and 270 gr. Speer in Lapua cases. I look forward to it's arrival.

Date: Nov 19, 2004
Cartridge: 9.3x62
Firearm: CZ 550 American
Scope: Leupold VX-II 1-4x
Barrel Length: 23.6" (60 cm)
Bullet: Prvi Partizan
Bullet Weight: 285 (18.5g)
Powder: RL-15
Powder Weight: 58.0
Case Make: Graf
Primer: WLR (not magnum)
C.O.L.: 3.29"

Chronograph
Shot# Velocity fps
1 ___ 2,317
2 ___ 2,320
3 ___ 2,327
4 ___ 2,314
5 ___ 2,319
6 ___ 2,307
7 ___ 2,309
8 ___ 2,299
9 ___ 2,314
10 __ 2,318

Summary
Average Velocity: 2,314 fps
Energy: 3,389 ft lb
High Velocity: 2,327 fps
Low Velocity: 2,299 fps
Extreme Spread: 28 fps
Standard Deviation: 7 fps
Coefficient of Variation: 0.30 %

(Coefficient of Variation = std deviation / average velocity)
(Just a handy ratio for comparing one load to another.)

This load was very accurate with a couple of 5-shot groups hovering right around 1 inch or so (at 100 yds). Velocity is on the mild side but still within 9.3x62 velocity specs. (If I remember correctly, Kynoch/ICI loaded their ammo to 2250 fps. RWS and Sellier & Bellot currently load to a spec of 2280 fps. Norma and Sako load to 2360fps with a 285/286gr bullet.)

For those of us in the USA, the 9.3 Prvi Partizan bullets are available at Grafs at very attractive prices. ($18.99 per 100) I was very pleased with the accuracy of this bullet considering their price. Should make a great practice load and it would probably work just fine on hogs down here in Texas.

Here's an Excel (Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows) spreadsheet listing the various factory ammunition ballistics for the 9.3x62 that I put together from various European ammunition web sites (plus Nosler Ammunition):

Nframe,

I have a 9.3x62 CZ in the Lux model. I love it. Like you said, it hardly kicks at all. And it's been MOA accurate with the 270gr Speers and the first powder I tried, which was Win 760. I liked the load so I haven't worked hard at finding another one yet, though I have some 286gr Partitions I want to play with.

I also have a CZ Full Stock model, but in 6.5x55. I'd always heard stories of poor accuracy with full stocks, but mine is very accurate.

Your dealer is talking sh*t, as CZ doesn't have them and they have no idea when they are coming, and all they are going to get in the next shipment are spoken for, the last I heard.

Wink NFrame!

Welcome to the world of 9.3x62 Mauser. I think you will really like both the rifle and the caliber selection!

I don't have a CZ, just a vanilla-flavored Mauser but have seen countless in use in 9.3x62 and didn't hear any complaining.

I have used IMR-4320 & 4064 with good results but currently dote on VV N-140 with 250 gr. Nosler BT's. I also shoot Speer 270 grainers as well. Both are fine bullets for European game (Wild Boar & Red Stag).

Will also be taking it to RSA this summer - but it'll be spitting Nosler 286 gr. Partitions powered by VV N-140 - can't wait.

Cheers,

Gerry
