You tell me! What caliber for this rifle?
I am having a custom rifle built. One option will be off of the long action from Montana. The action has a capacity to hold a cartridge that is 3.650" [inch] in length.

What caliber would you pick for deer, elk, black bear, caribou, wild boar, and eventually plain game in Africa?

I appreciatre your opinions. It is always nice to see the diversity in how we all think. Personally, I was pointing in the 300 H&H direction.

The reason I have not really looked at the 30'06 class of cartridges is becuase I kind of feel it is a waste to have that nice magnum box stuffed with standard length rounds.

If it was a standard box, it would probably have a 9.3X62mm stuffed in it already.

As much as I like the 300 Mag, you might cinsider the 338 Win Mag.
With 210 Nosler Partitions [or similar] it shoots plenty flat, and with 250 Nosler Partitions [or similar] it will handle the big stuff if you bump into them up close, but you still have some reach.

Oh didn't I mention that I already have a 338 Win Mag?

I would prefer another caliber.

I was going to suggest a 300 until you said you have a 338 win mag.

I'd be looking at a 7mm stw or 7mm-300 wby to fill that magnum action. Long range deer, elk, caribou, and plains game. Bullets ranging from 100 to 195 grains.

That's just my take, Diversity right?

I think i would opt for the 358 STA. I have a model 70 classic in 7mmSTW I was considering a rebarrel to the sta but i think I will hang on to it for awhile and see what tarts happining at the gun shows in reguards to model 70 classic prices.

333_OKH,
I just had a rebarrel done on a long action that was difficult choice to make as you are dealing with one now. Confused
As is your predicament, I have a 338WM and on the other side I have a 7mmRM. What is a guy to do.
After looking over the ballistic charts and bullet/brass availability, I opted for the 300WM. I am probably going with a 200grn pill for it. (just got the brass preped)
The 7STW may be a good choice for ya too!!
Whatever your decission, if it ain't what you want you can always try again. Wink Big Grin

Get what you want but all of the game mentioned can be taken easily with a 308 or 30-06. I would much rather carry around a lighter rifle in the Featherweight weight and size range than a magnum and for sure they are easier to shoot well.

If your after a magnum get one of course. My experiance with the 300 H&H however is that it's not a very good round if your thinking of handloading it and it's even worse trying to find ammo for it.

If I were getting a custom I would much rather have a Dakota action than a M1999. On the other hand I don't think about customs much. I have had a blank here for 25 years and it's still a blank.

This may sound like a bit of a dumb question but will the magazine length be the same as the action length or will it be a bit shorter?

300 Wetherby, for a traveling rifle I'd stick to a more standard cartridge. For a reach out and touch round, is pretty tough to beat the original 30 cal W round.

I'm going to put in a plug for the .358 STA. I have been doing a lot of research on this round lately and am impressed enough I am sending in my shot-out .300 Jarrett for conversion to STA. I like the idea of 250 gr bullets at 3000 fps, 275's at 2800, and 300's at 2700. It sounds like it will reach waayyy out there with authority, or kick a$$ when it's up close and personal. I had thought I was going with the .340 Weatherby, but this round sounds like even more of a good thing.

Hmmmmmmm! A 300H&H, slick feeding but around the same speed as a 30-338, with handloads. Beauty and desire are in the eye of the beholder. If your heart is set on a 300H&H go for it, as it is a simple rechamber job should you desire a bigger 30 cal.
