.300 H&H flanged
This round is no easy to get here in Europe (W.Romey might be the only one source), however for me it is a classic and I think it would be a fine choice for my new single shot rifle project. It would be a good company to my current 7x57 rifle for wood hunting where shots rarely exceed 100 yards.
However the ballistics are not so impressive and it varies upon source. If I can reach the ballistics of a common 30-06 I would be satisfied. What’s your experience?

CZ Why wouldn't you consider the 30R Blaser cartridge. A little more performance and new stronger more availible cases.

In a modern barreled and strong single shot action, you can easily load the .300 H&H Fl to equal the .300 Win Mag and possibly even a little more.

However, where this cartridge exceeds in woods shooting is loaded with 220gr bullets at traditional speeds or slightly hotter. It then makes not only a great woods caliber, but also highly effective for Moose, bear, boar, etc.

The ballistics you are probably reading are conservative based upon the old guns that used to be chambered for this cartridge. You can load this cartridge to do what any .300 caliber can do.

Great choice for a single shot or light double rifle.

30 R Blaser has a fairly short neck and I love long necks…! For me it is a classic of the old good days... And I would like to use heavier bullets, the 200gr or even 220gr for hogs or mule deer.

Why not simply use the regular belted version of the cartridge? It is easy enough for a gunsmith to create an extractor which works with it.

Stonecreek, you are right but my new project will be based on Ruger No.1 and as a bit conservative guy, I have the opinion that this and break open actions should be generally loaded with rimmed cartridges only.

I have a Ruger #1S in .300 H&H Belted and I love it. I got lucky and found one that shoots real true. I had a replacement safety added that allows true ejection which has made a world of difference. The trigger on my rifle is also very crisp and light, just about perfect with no gunsmithing work needed. The replacement safety required my gunsmith to smooth it out and polish the mechanism so that is is smooth and without noise. Big improvement.

I understand the nostalgia value of the rimmed cartridge. I'm often that way myself. It's just going to be easier for me since I'm adding a .300 H&H bolt rifle back to my arsenal. Makes for easier collection of brass and for one stop handloading.

Love Mine!! The only single Holland built in this caliber. Made for the Duke of Cranbrook and delivered in 1926.
