358 STA
Does anyone make 358 STA brass? That is, properly headstamped?

I know I can make it from 8mm Rem Mag.

Man purley5 Buffalo Arms is sure proud of their brass. Better have Norma/Lapua or better quality.

Jay Johnson ----- I agree with the price being high. If you know where the Norma/Lapua can be bought, please post. wave Good shooting.

I know it's off the subject, but I was thinking of getting a 358 STA. How do you like yours? Is there any factory rifles made in that caliber, and if not, what's the action and so forth to use to build one?

gohip2000 ----- I presently shoot two .358 STA's, and with a wide choice of bullets from 185 grains to 310, they can be used for hunting the world over. Both of my rifles are Model 70 actions and both customs. You would need a Magnum long action to build from. The Winchester Custom Shop produced 58 rifles for A-Square some years ago, I was lucky enough to find one of those, otherwise I don't know where you could find a factory rifle. I do know Lilja produces barrels, because my second rifle has one of their custom barrels. I have hunted with my STA's from Colorado, to Alaska, Alberta and Africa, and they have served me well. A 225 grain bullet at 3200 fps and a 270 grain bullet at 2900 plus fps has many applications. wave Good luck and good shooting.

Thanks for the info phurley. I like the idea of the 358STA because it would be flat shooting and have more power than the 338 winmag with heavier bullets. If I ever needed anything bigger than that, I'll probably get something in the 416 or bigger caliber.

Hip: there is a 358 STA, shilen barrel, mcmillan stock on 700 rem bdl action at Green mountain guns, Lakewood co. YOu can get it for 600. This rifle is in new condition, but I don't know how it shoots. It is a heck of a rig for less than half of what it would cost you to build. I want it, but just don't have a need with a 375 and a 7 Rem.

might be worth a trip from Minnesota for that price, But I would have to wait a few more months before purchasing a new rifle

You know, one big problem with building a custom rifle around Bell Brass is Bell is no longer making brass. Unless, perhaps, the new buyer is licensed to use the name?

Bell sold all of its brass business in July of 2004. I'd sure hate to spend a couple of grand to build a rifle and only to find out I can no longer get headstamped brass. I suppose one could buy 500 pcs up front and hope none of it is ever lost in transit to some distant hunting location.

RobertD ----- I have Bell brass that I loaded when I went to Africa, because I wanted the headstamp correct. Most of my brass is necked up 8mm Mag. You can make it from .375 H&H, which is very plentyful. Many ways to skin that cat. wave Good shooting.

Yeah, I knew about the 8mm Rem Mag neck up for 358 brass. My comments were oriented to properly headstamped brass. Seems it is out there, just not from a lot of folks.

Yah $35 for twenty rounds at Midway. Not what I'd call reasonable. Have to keep using that 8MM head stamp.

Yep! you do pay for that headstamp. The reason for the correct headstamped brass is taking the rifle to a country where they check for that sort of thing. I would sure be bummed if I got there and they wouldn't let me take the ammo in because the headstamp didn't match what was written on the barrel.

I am sure this cuts down on gun smuggling to a large degree....... but don;t get me started on this one!
