favorite 280 bullet

looking for a bullet for my rem 700 in 280 that has a 22in barrel. bullet will be used on whitetails from 30yds to 300yds. the powder I have is follows, imr 4350, h4831sc and rl22. thanks guys for your time.

Dr. LouFor years it was the 140 NBT, but will now be buying the AB and want to try the 140 TTSX.

adamhunter140 Gr Accubond. My 700 280 loves em in factory stuff. Can only imagine it would get better if I ever get around to reloading for my 280.
30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

fredj338I would not trust the NBT or even the SST w/ an impact vel above 2700fps. Inside 100yds, you are looking at bullet fragmentation. I like the 140grNAB or NP @ 3000fps for antelope & deer from 30yds-400yds.

buckshotI like the plain vanilla Hornady 154 grain bullet. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work perfectly on anything the rifle is capable of taking.
If I wanted to shoot 130 grain bullets, I'd get a 270.

NakihunterMy 280 AI loves the 160 Accubonds with N560 at 3030 fps. You should get 2900 fps with that powder. My rifle also likes Barnes Tsx 140s & 150S and any of your powders should do well. I shoot Rem PSPCL 150s for practice on the club range & it is good on deer as well but does damage some meat.
My 7mm08 does well with TSX 140s and Rem PSPCL 140s or 150s.

olarmyNo need for a premium bullet for deer with a 280, IMO. I have used the 145gr Speer Hot Core for decades with IMR4350. Always gotten perfect results.

lennythanks for the all the help. I did have trouble (twice)at close range with a 140 seirra btsp out of one of my 270's. the range was under 50 yds both times. without going to a premium bullet,does the hornaday seem to hold togather better than the seirra?

Or another good bullet is the 140gr Sierra HPBT GameKing. It is "tougher" than their regular SPBT GAmeKings and , IME, very accurate.

BiebsYes, GameKings or even Pro Hunters have worked very well for me on such game in that caliber. Also, tough to beat an Accubond if your rifle likes them. My 7mm Rem puts them in .35" groups in the factory Federal load.

How much accuracy do you need @ 50yds!? Really, at those close distances, impact vel above 2800fps, I would only be shooting a "harder" bullet like a Barnes or bonded something. Cup/core bullets just grenade at those distances. The last antelope I shot took a 145gr SPeer @ 3000fps, about 150yds & still left a baseball size exit wound. Oh yeah, the lope went down, but my shot went a bit high & ruined half a backstrap & part of the shoulder. I can only imagine what the damage would have been @ 50yds.

I dunno Fred. All I can say is that my experience has been very different from yours.

Bernie P.Both my 7x57 and .280 seem to prefer 150gr bullets over 140gr so far but I'm pretty new to reloading and haven't tried that many different bullets/powder combos yet.

JD338I have used the 140 gr BT in a 280 Rem to kill several WT deer from 40 yds to over 300 yds. The farthest tracking job was about 3 jumps, the rest dropped in their tracks from lung/heart shots. The 140 gr BT kills like lighting.
If you want a tougher bullet, go with the 140 gr AB.

gzig5I've been using the Horndady 139gr BTSP Interbond in my .280 R700 Mountain Rifle with 22" barrel since 1994 and never had an animal go further than 30 yards. I tried several other bullets but sold them all off because nothing shot better and the bullet performance has always been perfect from 12yds out to 320yds. My load is a maxish charge of IMR4350 that gives 2900 fps and 3/4" ten shot groups at 100yds. Now I can concentrate on practicing from position rather than load development with new components. Despite what others may think, whitetails have not developed any bullet-proof armor so you just need a bullet that will hold together on a close shot and open up on a long one. The Interbond does that well and at a price that is very hard to beat.
