Recently picked up a nice Mauser 9.3x64 and want to put a decent scope on it. Have a few in the stable I could choose from...

- Leupold 1.75-6 Vari-X III
- Kahles 2.2-9x42 (30mm tube)

Leaning towards the Kahles because it seems to fit better having a Euro scope on this rig, but is it overkill for this setup?? The Leupold is shorter and lighter...

Using Talley QD ring setup if it matters...

I like the 1,75.

Either would be good, but I would choose the Kahles. Topped with 250gr bullets that is not a short range only caliber, so I would go with the scope with more reach. I have a 2.5-10 Trijicon on mine and really like the combo.

The 9.3X64 has some reach and can take advantage of higher magnification. I have a Swaro 3-9 X36 on mine and am pleased with it. Really, it all depends on how you will be using the rifle.

My current thoughts are either work well, but it's basically a 338 Winchester with 300 grain bullets, and I'd scope it accordingly.

A preview of egun.de will point you toward the Euro fashion of 2.5-10x56 or 3-12x56 or pure pig bashers will use a 8x56 (for night time boar hunting).

Either one will work fine.

DPCD barreled one of my Mausers last year in 9,3x62. I'd categorize it as more of a 35 Whelen on steroids than a 338WM.

I bought a Leupold 2.5-8X for it.

Figure it for about a 300yd rifle, and go from there.

Either of the two you mentioned would be a good fit.

Use the Kahles....don't limit yourself.

The 9.3x64 is a lot closer to the 375 H&H ballistically than it is to the 338 Win. Do NOT confuse this with the 9.3x62. The 9.3x64 is a powerhouse and it will reach past the 300 yd mark. Mine has a 2 1/2-10x scope and it is just about perfect.

I agree with snowman. The X64 is a real hammer ballistically.

I'd still feel better at 300 or so than farther. But, I have a 375 IMP and I feel the same way about its' range. For me, it's easier to just sneak a little closer...

Of the 2 scopes you mention the Kahles seems like the best choice of the 2.
Depends on the type of hunting you do or expect to do, I know some people on AR are low power scope fans but I don't fall in that group.
I have a 9.3x62 with a Leupold 2.5-8 and the same scope on both my .375 H$H 's, I have a 2-7 on my 400 Whelen. In my opinion for my type of hunting the 1.75-6 is a little on the low end for me.

I put a 1-4x24 - 30mm tube (Vortex Viper PST) on my 9.3x62 and really like it, good for up close all the way out to 300 yards

I have a 1.5-6x42 on mine .
Good light gathering ability and 6# helps with those " out there " shots.

Nosler shows the following on their website.

338 Win with a 300 Grain Accubond at 2432 FPS
375 H&H with a 300 Grain Accubond at 2600 FPS
9.3x64 with a 286 Grain Partition at 2690 FPS
9.3x62 with a 286 Grain Partition at 2414 FPS

Not sure what difference the 14 grains makes on the 9.3s.

338 Win with a 250 Grain Accubond at 2780
375 H&H with a 260 Grain Accubond at 2793
9.3x64 with a 250 Grain Accubond at 2802
9.3x62 with a 250 Grain Accubond at 2582

Not sure what a difference that 10 grains of .375 caliber increase makes.

So we are both wrong and we are both right. The 338 is the equal of the 375 and 9.3x64 with 250 grain bullets and closer to the 9.3x62 with the 300 grain bullets.

338 Win Mag is way more cartridge than it is often given credit for.

Nosler's test barrels for the 9.3x62 was 26 inches, the 9.3x62 was 25 inches, and the 375 and 338 were 24 inches.

Nominal but worth doing with equal length barrels.

That is the same scope I am planning on for my 64. Except for mil reticle and turrets. . With a little practice, 400 yards won't be troublesome on a deer, bou or moose when loaded with a 250 gr TTSX or AccuBond @ 2750 fps. . My drop and drift will be similar to my 6.5 Creedmoor carbine. Which will wear the same scope.
However, between the Leupold or the Kahles, pick the one you like the best on the rifle by trying both. !!!

Put a Leupold VXR 3-9x40 IR-w-CDS on my Tikka 9.3x62.

I will pick a Leupold every time, they have just performed so well over the last 60 years that I have used them almost exclusively and the guarantee is faultless..even if you buy one second hand the guarantee is on the scope not the purchase.
