LHeym500Discontinue date pre 64 270
One of my reference books, “The Winchester Handbook” List the 270 Win in the pre 64 Model 70 was discounted in 1949.
This seems early to me.
Does anyone have a source disputing this?

squeezenhopeI think you should look at this from a different perspective. What ever you are quoting is a misprint or totally bogus. .270's were the second most produced caliber and they made them right up to the bitter end, sometime in 1963.

LHeym500That is why I am trying to cross reference. A reference is only as good as the sources the author has or can find.
He does list over 6000 near 7000 made between 1936 and 1943. This is the second most during the time frame listed. Second, only to the 30/06.
If possible reference material should always be crossed referenced against other material.
The two main references I am aware of are the Whitaker (author) and Rifleman’s Rifle book. However, I do not own any of those. The other info in the reference cited above has been good dope. But I was reading it again last night and this hit me.

Samuel_HoggsonBetter not have been discontinued in '49. Cuz I have a real nice one from '50.
Seriously, Rule has a chapter on chamberings. M-70s in .270 WCFs were produced from '36 to '63. Ie., continuously.

TexKDThere is No question that they were produced right up until 1963 end of production in 270 and other calibers.
The so called "best quality ones" I have heard were produced in the early and middle 1950s. I can't say I have seen that but it makes some sense as Winchester was back on track after the WW2 war years.

RCflashRan the serial number of my Pre64 Model 70 in 270 past the people in the Cody, Wyoming, museum. It was made in 1953. The '53' is stamped on the barrel bottom right in front of the receiver ring.

BuglemintodayFound a 1952 Model 70 in .270 in my local shop, are they still holding their value at around $1000+? SN#275xxx

LHeym500Yep, I ran into a bunch that appeared to be 50s rifles. The book I gave at the beginning referenced the barrel stamping year at bottom of barrel. Als, gives an approximate serial number range that practice stopped.
So, it does have good info, Bust as I was reading it gave the discontinue date that made me ask the question.
Maybe it is an issue of writing. That at the end of 49 nearly 7,000 270 Winchester Model 70s were made. The 30/06 was first in numbers produced that time period. Other potions the book has an error of made by the author of fact or the publisher when printing the table screwed up.
Thank you all for the information. Rule’s book is on order. I just had to break down and buy it.

tsibindi...perhaps the reference was to the discontinuation of the barrel stamp. Prior to late '49, early '50 the barrel designation stamp changed from .270 WCF, to .270 WIN. Just a thought.

LHeym500I just got Rule’s book in the mail. I will cross reference and see if that makes since.
