I originally posted this on the Arican Hunting page but didn't get a response- anyone here wanna take a stab at it?
Yesterday I came upon an interesting rifle- to the best of my knowledge it is a Mannlicher model 1908 carbine in 8x56mm. The receiver had been drilled & tapped for scope mounts (6 holes- looks like they had 2 different mounts) and the gun had obviously been refinished. I thought that it would be an interesting gun to shoot & hunt with as any collector value would be lowered by the modifications. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle/cartridge? I was thinking that it would be a fun gun to take on an african hunt as a secondary rifle to take a couple of animals with for nostalgia sake. I'd say it's overpriced at $825 considering the condition (I'd say 50% or so). Any thoughts? Thanks.

Absolutely. I share your value estimate in the given condition. And the 8x56 MS really is the least desirable of the five classic Mannlicher-Sch�nauer cartridges. Not bad, but...

As the collector value is gone, if you buy it don't forget to get those ugly screw holes filled by a competent inert gas welder...at least any you don't use for your own scope. Asking around among the shop instructors at your local Jr. college is a good way to find a welding artist...doesn't hurt to ask at collector's gun shows either.

Filling the holes WILL make it shoot better in your hands, because it will "look" right and good...good morale always helps build good shooting.
