LOP
I'm putting together a couple of rifles; a .243 Win and a 7RM. Both will have Sako actions and Ron Smith barrels. The .243 will have a 24" sporter barrel and the 7 RM will have a 26" magnum sporter barrel. Both will be stocked with a Harry Lawson Cochise. What is the recommended LOP for a thumbhole? Is it the same as a sporter stock? Is there any advantages of checkering on a thumbhole stock?

The .243 will be used for shooting practice and the 7 RM for hunting everything from whitetail to moose in Alberta and PG in Africa. The strategy for stocking both the same is to retain the same general feel when shooting either rifle.

Length of pull is determined by the shooter and not the type of stock. It shouldn't change because of a different stock style.

If the position of the hand changes, wouldn't the LOP change? Do your thumbholes have the same LOP as your sporters?

WinkMore than any other factor the LOP is determined by the distance from your shoulder to where the trigger engages your finger with the rifle held in the battery position. The thumb hole may come into play but if the guy making the guns has any savy he should be able to fit you. Work with him. holycowroger

Roger,

Harry Lawson is Tucson and I'm up here in Alberta. What would be the procedure for him to fit me? My impression was that I specify the LOP when I order the stcok.

Bobby, I would strongly suggest that you Tele., or E-mail him and find out how he wants to Handle it or find some Thumb hole stocks in your area , try them , make your decision, and send him some scetches with demensions. beerroger

There shouldn't be any difference in the proper LOP between a conventional pistol grip stock and a thumbhole stock. If in doubt, specify it a little on the long side -- it's easier to trim a half-inch off than to add it.
