I'm thinking about rebarelling my Winchester M70(post-64) from .300WM to 30-06. Is this just as simple as a barrel change? Would any action work need to be done for this to work? Is this even possible?

The bolt face is too big for the 30.06 cartridge case.

Fjold is correct a new bolt would be required because of the smaller bolt face of the 30/06.Maybe a different follower and magazine box too.
Rather than go thru that and a re barrel just sell it and get an '06 in a similar rifle or load "down" your 300 to 30/06 levels or see if there is any reduced recoil ammo available for 300 win mag.
What is it you aren't liking with a 300 that you'll like more with the 30/06?
I've personnaly never thought they were all that far apart performance wise.

Yes, reduced recoil loads by Remington or others would make it '06-like in performance, without the expense of a caliber change. On a post-64, it wouldn't be worth it.

I found a lefty SS M70 that I couldn't pass up. Had thoughts of rebaralling to 30-06 but will keep as 300WM. Found Federal makes a 130gr TTSX ammo for the .300WM.... Might actually work better than an -06.

Thats a big statement work better then an 06.

I guess what ones means by better.

You can duplicate 30/06 performance with a 300 Win but you can't duplicate a 300 Win with an 06.

If you aren't going to be shooting very far, and only at deer sized game, this is probably a better choice then the 130's

Don't get me wrong, I like the 130gr TTSX and have used it (on paper only) with my 300 Wby. Recoil is greatly reduced, but it is VERY hard on barrels because of the speeds.

What are you planning on using the rifle for?

Actually, bullet velocity has very little to do with barrel wear. Barrels do not wear out at the muzzle where the velocity is high - they wear out at the leade where the velocity is lowest. The high pressure/temperature gasses heat the steel, washing away metal and leaving the bore looking like a dry lake bed. Keep the pressures moderate and your barrel will last longer regardless of the bullet velocity. Redline the loads and fire rapidly enough to get the barrel good and hot, and you will lose the throat soon enough. BTDT.

the feed rails are much wider, that would be the biggest area of concern for me. Just download it and be happy...

you'd be surprised....

as a Nosler Reload Tech put it several years ago... " you can't get enough H 4831 SC in an 06 to over pressurize it... and exceed 06 SAAMI Specs..."
