7x57 with 162 Amax
Guys

I have a new build build about 8 weeks away

It's a reworked later he mauser 98 with a #2 Douglas barrel

It's in the white so I can still change the final barrel length

It's a stutzen so its going to be a shorty

Has anybody done any quantitative comparison shall we say 19, 20, 21 inches to be ideal

I am not worried about speed but I am fascinated about the high bc of 162 amax

Any hot shots here with quickload with spare time ?

Care to computate some scenarios for me ?

Norma brass
Federal LR primers 205
H4350
162 amax
20 inch barrel

What range should I start from and what vmax to expect from shall we say 20 incher ....

Thanks

On the other hand any input would be appreciated

As I said its in the white for at most 4 more weeks then its cooked

This is probably my first multiple shot hunting I am going to feed from a magazine and will be used regularly

I have plenty of magazine length to play with

Does amax like jumping or like to live close to the land ?

Also anybody shoots the classic 173 grain in this caliber

Is the penetration impressive on live game in your experience ?

london,
If you are going to use the heavy bullets have your rifle setup to use the long bullets. A longer throat and the magazine made long enough for the long heavy bullets seated so they don't restrict powder capacity.

My gunsmith have done just that

That's why I am only considering 162 and 173

A little bird tells me there is also a 190 grain 7mm bullets !

Must look like chopsticks ...............

Heym SR20
Can't speak for the 7x57 but round nose 173 gn out of my 7x65r absolutely flattens roe bucks and is accurate. But out of lightweight rifle a little on the punchy side. For roe I use a 139 gn at 2650 fps and does the job very well.

I posted this link on another thread so you may have already seen it. If you haven't, it includes an interesting commentary on the advantages of the 162 gn Hornady A-Max in the 7x57 Mauser and 7-08.

I now use the A-Max projectile exclusively in the two 7x57s I own. One is an HVA Husqvarna that has been re-barreled in 7x57 with a short throat while the other is a Brno Model 21H with a long throat. I seat the projectiles just a fraction off the lands in both rifles. Obviously that means I could get more powder in the cases loaded for the Brno but I don't do that because max velocity isn't so important with the A-max due to its light construction.
