sksshooterRight now I NEED a 300 haven't decided if i need a win mag or wsm though and i need it to have a nikon or leupold in the 4-14x50range.
after that purchase i think i will need another 1911 possibly in 9mm
next i will need to assemble that dedicated 22 upper for the lower i have sitting in the cabinet.
after that i think i will need a nickel/stainless 357 revolver
next i will need a nickel/stainless 22 revolver
after that i think if i don't need anything else i will need to restock my .17hmr and put a new scope on it.
after all of that i think i will need another place to store them.
my wife thinks i need to stop buying guns.

McSternin all honesty: probably only one.
a .308 or .30-06 or 8x57 or 9x62

Never take a used gun hunting. You never know when something might break.

Now that requires the flag to be raised

MikelravyI always seem to need one more than I have. Could get by with 338 though if I had to.

Paul TunkisI did "gun of the year" for several decades, learned quite a bit about different calibers, actions and manufacturers. Got tired of it after a while I guess.
Now, I have what I can shoot enough to be compedent with in the field. It seems that the smaller the hole in the end of the barrel the more I shoot it. 500 to 1000 rounds seems minimum for the 270, less than 300 for the 9.3x62, 1000's for the 223 and well, I just buy cases of ammo for the 22LR. I long ago learned that you really got to practice with a handgun to be any good at all. The result is I've only got two calibers, 22LR (Ruger Bearcat) and a couple of Super Blackhawks in 44mag. Practice ammo for these has to be in the 1000+ per year.
I have a friend that is a collector more than a hunter and he has lots of rifles but really only shoots one well and that's what he hunts with.
The all-around rifle is a myth, nothing can serve well in every situation. My 22LR is a CZ452 with a trigger job, nearly 8 pounds and serves me well for gophers. The 223, a CZ 527 Varmint is scarry accurate and is the only varmint rifle I've ever owned that never needed any "up-grades" from a gunsmith. My 270 is a 13 pound custom with a 27.5 inch Lilja barrel that holds honest 0.75 MOA groups, I use it for whitetails from stands out to 600yds and for rock-chucks as far as I can spot one. The 9.3x62 weighs just 8 pounds and is no fun to shoot more than 10 times in a day. I was perfect in Namibia in the bush and knocks the crap out of elk in the blacktimber. The light weight means it stays in my hands rather than on my shoulder and that has made a difference a time or two.
"Never take a used gun hunting. You never know when something might break." WTF?
All my rifles are used, it's called practice.
How about never take a new gun hunting. You never know anything about it and if it has problems you'll find out when it is absolutely the worst time and place. I would not consider taking a rifle out on a serious hunt with which I had not fired AT LEAST 300 rounds in practice.

seafire/B17GI don't know if anyone remembers it...but there was a gent from South Africa, that indicated their laws allows them to own 5 firearms and that was it...
so he owned 2 pistols..
and 3 Savage Rifles..
2 long actions, a short action
bolt heads to fit a 223 bolt face, a 30/06 bolt face and a Magnum bolt face...
5 stocks to fit the Savage actions depending upon need...
oh and Lastly.... 58 different barrels in various calibers...

30 August 2010, 22:16
eezridrWell, can I include my fathers age? I inherited a bunch of nice guns beyond what I have personally acquired. A lot of them are being passed down to my son as soon as he gets his gun safe.
EZ

OddbodI know people happy with two or three rifles.
I know people happy with ten & more.
I know people with more than twenty & it's THEM who don't think they have enough - I can relate to that.

Lloyd Smalewhen and if im around long enough to get to 200 i may have to consider not buying more.

sam308A conversation between my parents, heard many years ago:
Dad: "I'm buying a new gun."
Mom: "How many guns do you need?"
Dad: "How many pairs of shoes do you need?"
Mom "It's not the same thing."
Dad: "You're right it's not. Guns are more like jewelry, except they're not totally useless."
Dad got the rifle. Mom got some new shoes and some earrings. Dad got a corvette. Mom got a boyfriend. They got divorced.
You can't ever have too many guns. Just keep your mouth shut about it.

Jpat"Need" is relative. As stated above, special purpose comes into play. Hunting, target, military target, collectables.
6.5x55 is very versatile.
M1600 small ring '98 for hunting.
M41b for long range High power shoots.
M96 for military iron sight shoots.
M38 for Military iron sight shoots and plinking.
That is 5 in one caliber! Think of the possibilities! Reloading sure helps in versatility.
27 rifles in 15 calibers, and I still want a few more.
Even the .44-40 has more uses than most people know. 160gr Cast Lead for vermin and plinking, 200..205gr for target and general Whitetail hunting. The 1892 Winchester w/ 24" barrel is an awesome rifle.

Red C.For me, it isn't a matter of need. I just love guns and reloading. For example, I have a .357 S&W and enjoy loading for it and shooting it. I then began to think that a lever action .357 rifle would be fun. Not because of a need, but just for the fun of loading and shooting. I have this terrible problem, though, a lack of funds for this approach.
Red C.
Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

GeedubyaThat's like asking a junkie if he needs another fix.
I can't say, as I've been collecting, buying and selling for close to 20 years now, and I'm still one rifle (maybe two or three depending on the day) away from being happy!

Captain FinlanderI love this one. I like the original selection which covers the NA rifle battery very well. I would have to have a least one bolt action .22 LR. I don't see the need for the added velocity of the 22-250 and would opt for a .223AI which narrows the margin considerably without wasting powder. The 280 is a great choice and there is no argument there but I personally own a 270 win. The 338-06 is another perfectly placed caliber and compliments the selection well. I would consider adding a larger bore 416 rem. mag +++?
22lr, 223AI, 280AI, 338-06 and 416 rem mag.

EDMHUNTERIt is always about need. Does anyone want something they will never use or enjoy? Everone's needs are different. Some people need to fill the safe with guns to make them happy. Some people do not need more than one gun to make them happy.

I would take a hard look at the CZ550 with synthetic stock and plain (no iron sights) barrel of about 24 inches. It is lighter better balanced rifle then the Mannlicher stocked version. I wish they made one in stainless steel.

Jim C. <><How many clubs does a golfer need and why does he need them?
Answer - We all need as many special purpose tools as it takes for what we do.
Those who hunt deer in the same woods for their whole life need perhaps two, one for early season when the leaves are full and a longer range tool for late season. Those who hunt multipule criters in various terrains need more. Those who target shoot need tools for the matches they shoot. Those who do both need the right thing for them all.
I figger I need about a hundred and I'm less than half way there. ??
