54JNollCan't help you an when it was made but if it is indeed an 8X57I then it will use the smaller .318 diameter 8mm bullets rather than the more common .323 diameter bullets as would the 8X57S AKA the 8X57IS.

fla3006Danzig sporters were made at the Danzig Arsenal after WWI from left over military parts. Quite a few were imported into the USA in the 1920s. Most are marked 7.9 (8x57J), some were chambered in 8.15x46R. See Ludwig Olson's book, page 292.

54JNollI do have a Danzig Mauser action but it is clearly marked 1918 and again 1920. I was told these represented the year of manufacture and the year it was reconditioned. I do not know what chambering it was originally. It is a 7mm-08 now.

JudgeSharpeHello the Campfire:
The American Rifleman has an article this month on Mauser marking. Since I don't have one I did not read it, but it appears to give the date codes. Maybe that would help.

Paul BI have one that was rebarreled ny none other than P.O. Ackely to .270 Winchester. Frankly, if the quality of the work done on that rifle is the norm for Old P.O., then he damn well does not deserve the reputation he has. it will probably run my close to $500 just to get that gun squared away. I figure if I have to put out that kind of money anyway, I might as well go whole hog and do a proper restoration to a metric caliber. It sure would make a neat 7x57. Either that or it's an expensive wall hanger.
