Zastava Mauser Action

Picked up a Zastava stainless steel mauser action rifle with the synth stock.It is in 7x64 caliber. Initially the action seemed a little rough but after cleaning out the inside of the bolt and under the extractor clip things were a lot better. Some black crud and some small metal chips were not helping anything that I could see.A little polishing and stoning may be in order but I have all winter to play with that. Kind of a cheap plastic stock but it fits me pretty good so will try it for a while. I bought this thing to hunt with in nasty weather (wet snow etc) . I thought what could be better than a dependable 98 action with the action and barrel in stainless ?? Will get some test loads put together and will see if it will shoot soon.Anyone else try one of these ?? How does your shoot ??

The Zastavas have been around for decades and are virtually identical to an FN in configuration. They tend to be a bit rough, as you have indicated, but they are serviceable actions. I haven't had great accuracy from their barrels, however.

Hmm never had a MarkX or Daly that wouldn't shoot Moa or less

Rule 303

If it is an action made in the last 6 or so years just check that the scope mount holes are aligned correctly and the top of the rounded section of the action is central and not off to one side. had a few of the magnum actions come through Aust. that were like that. Seems their jigs must of been a bit worn.

Otherwise a very good action.

This one appears to be drilled straight.I believe they have only offered the stainless version in the last few years so maybe the SS versions are set up on new tooling???
Otherwise a very good action.

Rain finally let up and I made it to the range with a few test loads. Barrel can't be that bad as it grouped a couple loads of IMR 4831 and 150 gr Sierra's into an inch @ 100 yds. I was pleasantly surprised at the trigger. Crisp with almost zero creep. Haven't measured the trigger pull weight but a guesstimate would be in the 3 to 3 1/2 lbs. Time to get some more test loads ready and try the 200 yd range. I'm thinking this rifle may be a keeper.

Made it back to the range today. 55 and 56 grs of IMR 4831 both grouped under 1 in @ 100 yds. 56 is near max in this rifle. Not quite varmit accuracy but certainly minute of deer.

How much do the stainless Zastavas cost ?

I have had one factory one that would and have built two on Mark X actions that will.

The stainless versions sell for around $795 up here. Mine had a previous owner that fired 20 rds through it. I got the rifle with bases and a box of 1-fired RWS brass for $600. Spent a little more time at the range and have got it shooting 1 1/4 inch groups @ 200 yds. Pretty happy with that

got one for my wife in 9.3x62. i ve got few in left hand config that are not stainbless but still good for the price it was.

$795 for a new construction SS M98 Mauser is a very good price...even if it does require light stoning of the rails to smooth things up.

And if I recollect correctly, Zastava's first M98 Mauser based actions/rifles were produced from "one entire production line" procured from the FN factory.
