35 Whelen Improved for African PG
Just returned from a Bots PG hunt. This is the third time I have taken my Mauser 35 Whelen Improved to Africa.

58.5 Grains of RL15 behind 250 grain Nosler Partitions and 250 grain North Forks. Rem brass, CCI large rifle primers.

Both bullets in this load chrono between 2600/2615 fps and shoot 1.25 MOA in my rifle.

It's unfair to compare the two bullets because of their relative difference in construction, but both did very well indeed. Obviously, the North Fork retains more weight, but both offer similar, in-the-field, real world results. I doubt any of the game I took would have known the difference.

Solid results on eland, kudu, zebra, gemsbok and wildebeest, at ranges between 50 and 125 yards. Some shots were through the thorn bush, without issue. Four bullets were recovered from 11 heads of game.

I can't say enough about the 35---especially the 35 Whelen Improved----for African PG.

Best to you all..........TWL

All the hoopla we hear about the 9,3x62 being better than the std .35Whelen,....

-Pondoro Taylor used the .350Rigby-225gn 2600mv factory MV figure, [some orig. loadings have reprtedly shown 2500mv on the chrono]...to take a variety of African DG,
reporting that it killed with the same effect as the .375h&h out to about 150yd.
I believe Nosler custom ammo & loading manual,quotes 35Whelen 225gn near 2800mv.

great round, but I found my 30/06 more than adequate for eland--diker and everything in between 65 shots and 64 on the ground.

my guess is a 35 whelen would do fine as well?

On paper the 9.3x62 is a little better. In actual use on game, you'll probably never be able to tell the difference.
