Master gun builder Otto Boch was the foremost outfitter for hunting expeditions into the tropical regions during the Kaiser era. He developed one of the most internationally successful cartridges, the 9,3x62, in 1905. The case dimensions were adapted to the gunpowders available at that time. With the development of more progressively burniong powders during the 1920's and 1930's, case capacity of the 9,3x62 was reached before maximal velocities could be reached. The 9,3x62 could not compete with the ugly taper cased abomination called the 375 H&H Limey Poofter, whose only virtue was its greater case capacity.

The obvious need for a larger capacity cartridge to put those lingerie wearing blokes in their place led to the development in the mid-1920's by Wilhelm Brenneke of the 9,4x64 Brenneke cartridge. This cartridge maximized the potential of the standard 98 Mauser receiver, and certainly made the 375 H&H look like the wilted weenie effort that it was (Cordite my ass!, what civilized nation stuffs spaghetti into a cartridge case?).
