I bought my dad a remington vlss in 7mm ultra mag a few years back when they were about the only thing remington was chambering rifles in. Not much to pick from in the lefty at the time. Since the cartridge has lost its popularity and been around for a while, what type of barrel life are you guys getting from the 7 RUM?

I know it burns a lot of powder, but if it's only used for hunting, shouldn't it last a lifetime? At 20 rounds a year?

At 20rds a year, it will last several lifetimes before you see any appraciable accuracy fall off. SOme numbers I have seen say 1000rds before you atart seeing any accuracy diff. That's 50yrs @ your pop's rate of fire.

Thanks. That's what I thought. We usually shoot 20 rounds a year before season to practice and verify zero. If we're lucky he gets 1-2 shots during season.

If you guys are giving the throat time to cool b/w shots, it will last more than 1000 shots, despite that it is a hot-rod.

On bigger rifles, I only shoot 3-4 shot groups with a min or so between shots and make sure the barrel is not too warm.
