You can convert to any caliber from .170" to about .510" and use any case up to the Jeffery- or RUM-size. Anything over .458" will need to be more or less straight walled, meaning rimmed or belted, e.g. 50-110. There are conversions done on the Rigby case, the big Weatherby and the Lazzeroni likely, but there's a bunch of smiths out there who don't recommend a case that large for the 98 Mauser. The cartridge can easily be 3.34" long with minor feed work (which for the Jeffery or RUM would mean trimming), and a good smith can aparrently get you 3.6" if you really want it, though if it were me I'd get a long action to start with for that sort of thing.
So, as far as chamberings, you can have anything you can find on the 308 case, anything on the 30-06 case, anything on the 458 Win Mag case, Dakota's short line (270-375) and the 416 and 458 versions such as the Howell and Vincent Short, resp. There's the 376 Steyr and its wildcats, the 280 Ross and it's wildcats, 284 Winchester and its wildcats, and any WSM or wildcat thereof... that's about it. Other than that you're SOL. Sorry. Smiler

.260 Rem, 7mm-08, .243 Win, .358 Win, etc.....pretty much anything with a 0.473 case head will work.

Big Grin I have a 6.5x55, 7x57 308 and30-06 all on 98s. It depends what you plan to shoot. If something the size of elk or larger, I'd go 9.3x62. If up and including an occasional elk hunt, I'd leave it alone or rebore, not barrel to 30-06. capt david

"It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em." The 30-06 will, with the right bullet, successfully take any game animal in North America up to 300yds. Get closer!

Whoa! now, be very carefull, you cannot rechamber a .308 Win. to a 30-06 unless you set the barrel back a good deal..You can re-barrel to about any caliber..

You can rechamber to a 284 for instance as it will clean up the .308 chamber or you can rechamber to an Improved 30-06, 35 Whelen or 338-06 improved...

Always check and compare chamber specs before running a reamer in a chamber and remember turning a barrel back always screws up the bedding in the barrel channal...Consult a good gunsmith and then proceed.
