Parts: New Kimber 8400 series .338 WinMag. New Leupold VX-L scope, Dual Dovetail rings & bases.

Problem: Turning in the windage adjustment axis fully wont bring the reticle over to center,as viewed through the bore sight. Elevation adjustment is fine. Bore sight is fine.

Leupold blames Kimber; "variations in tolerances between bore, receiver & barrel will stack causing adjustment limitations." Could my Kimber be built that sloppy? Kimber said to try Kimber bases. Thanks.

Any way you can try another pair of bases? I would bet my last dollar its the Kimber receiver not drilled right or the barrel not installed properly but just to make sure

Remove rear base, rotate through 180 degs, reattach and try again - if your bases will allow this.

Had this problem last week, except bases were Warne and the scope was a swaro.

Sorted it perfectly.

You would probably end up in a poor house making such bets............

I've seen several M70 "Classics" built during the last few years of production with this problem. I've seen one that the screws were not only off line w/ the barrel axis, but were also in the receiver at an angle. A change to larger screws corrected all.

Hey Sitka Tolerance Stacking is nothing new, it can happen with all of them. If you still have the alignment problem you can cure it with Burris Signature Rings and a box of the Eccentric Inserts.

Once you use the Burris Signatures, you will wonder why everyone isn't making Rings the same way. They provide a non-marring, Torque Free, tenacious grip on the scope tube, that does not require lapping. And they are not too expensive.

Not so fast . I have had this same problem with 2 manufacturers in the past year. One a Remington and the other a Winchester. I too thought it impossible that the screws were out of alignment. As far as Talleys go they are not guaranteed either and you better have plenty of play windage wise if you plan on installing them as well.

Please note the the rifles that the problems have been documented in are Remington's and Winchester's, not Kimbers. I own examples of both M-70's and 700's with misdrilled holes but I've yet to run across a documented case of a Kimber having these problems.
If the Talley bases are misaligned it's almost always because of the receiver not the Talley's. Talley's are renowned for tight quality control on their tolerances. They even manufacture different thickness rear bases for M-70's because the M-70's vary so much.................................DJ

As has already been suggested, the first thing I would do is order a set of Talley's. The first thing I do for a new rifle... is order a set of Talley's.

That is a valid point...BTW the Remington had holes drilled wrong the Winchesters barrel was not exactly put on straight. The only time I have seen talley bases and rings put on a rifle and it was perfectly centered was with a Sako 75. I have had variances with all other rifles but the worse offenders are Remingtons,Winchesters.

I had a set of Conetrols on my Kimber. There was plenty of room to adjust for windage, if you want to invest in new rings and bases.
