I was having a discussion today with a mate of mine about the possibility of a 7mm/378 Wby becoming a Wby factory round.

Wby still has the 300, 338 and 375 Ultras beat with the 30/378, 338/378 and the 378.

Wby also has the 270 WSM beat with their 270 Wby.

But compared to the 7mm Ultra the 7mm Wby is an underbore plinking calibre

Do you think Wby will introduce a 7mm/378 Wby. Lazzeroni has the same thing with his 7.21 Firebire, although that is really a 7mm/416 Rigby Improved but case capacity is about the same.

God, I hope not. Talk about hopelessly overbore. Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done. If they want a hotter 7mm, then make a 7mm-300 Wthby. it's the same as a 7mm STW,but was wildcatted about 25 years before the STW. That's about the max usable case capacity for a 26" barrelled 7mm anyway.

It seems that even the 7MM RUM is overbore capacity so a 7MM-378 would have maybe 130 grs of water capacity! Did you mean a 7MM-300 Weatherby?

I don't view Weatherby cartridges as beating anything. In general they appeal to the uninformed who do not understand freebore, handloading, overbore nor marksmanship for that matter.

What counts is if someone would buy such a cartridge and Weatherby does have a following so just like all the other marketing cartridges I suppose they could throw it up against the wall.

The next step in the Weatherby marketing could be a .378 case that is gold plated with etched chains on the case.

I could not see Wby bringing out a 7mm-300 when the 7mm Ultra is there.

I think I read some where that for a period of time the 30/378 was representing close to 50% of Wby rifle sales.

Where are you going to find a bullet that would hold together at this supposed extreme velocity? Maybe we should also consider a 7MM-BMG, wouldn't that be a hoot? Then again the shooters back in 1925 probably said the same thing about the stuff we have come up with since them. I guess it's called progress.

From what I have heard and read the .30-378 Weatherby is already pushing the safety envelope because of overbore capacity, being very ticklish when it comes to pressure development. I was told Norma actually handloaded the first batches of Weatherby ammo in this calibre, for safety reasons. A 7mm-378 would is best left to a wildcatter with lots of experience and maybe access to pressure measuring equipment. If he is silly enough to have a go at it. I don�t believe there is anything to be gained over existing cartridges though. Tron

Here is an idea for Weatherby. Make the head of the .378 case solid from the rim for about 1.00". That way the customers will think they have a big case but it will not be grossly overbore.

The fact that the 30/378 sold well with Weatherby fits right in with their customers. They don't buy facts. They buy a dream.

A cartridge like 7mm-378 will be like the big Berta, Heavy Gustaf or THOR. A complete lack sense and very demanding to operate, but FUN

Barrel makes will favour a cartridge like this, Imagine. I would be wise to have a few extra barrels for such a rifle. Barrel lenght under than 28 inches will make it look like a flame thower

If you could get a suitable powder to bring out the top velocity/accuracy potential of the 7MM-378 WBY I would buy one.If it is as accurate as my 30-378 Accu Mark was it would be fantastic.

For all the people who knock Weatherby Cartridges and rifles maybe you should try some.
As Weatherby owners do not buy dreams we buy performance that you can see where it counts,in the paddock.

If you think your old lever action or standard cartridges is where is at ,no problem enjoy.
Yes I do own a 30-06,best bunny cartridge going,well nearly.
