I loaded up a few rounds of 300 H&H for my new to me M70 this afternoon. That is one sweet looking round compared to the WSM I usually load for.

IMO the .300 H&H is a mile ahead of the WSM rounds!!!!!

I bought my first 300H&H about a year ago, an FN Deluxe. Very accurate, easy on the shoulder.

This is one of my personal favorites. In a stupid move a few years ago, I sold a Remington Model 721 in this caliber. The gun was rough, without blueing, but the action was smooth and the barrel like new.

The 300 H&H is a real sweethear to load for. Use most any slow burning powder, I normally use 4350 or 4831 or either variety and enjoy each round down range. NOT a fan of the Winchester short magnums of any variety. Guess I cut my teeth on rifle/cartridge combinations of the long type and never had the feeding or other problems associated with the new stuff these days.

Mine is a Browning FN. One load so far 200gr NP
over H4831SC, MOA at 100yds.

In my 39 mod-70 i use 66 h-4350 over about any 180 gr bullet it's a fairly mild load that clocks about 2950fps-it will shoot 1 interlock 1 partion and 1 woodleigh into right at 1 inch-3 different bullets into one 3 shot group.

I have always wanted a 300 H&H. Everybody always raves about this accurate and smooth feeding cartridge. My dream rifle is a Browning on the FN action.

I have this custom rifle build that I am developing to send off to the gunsmith. I have always loved the H&H, but was thinking of building a little 6.5mm. Here is the deal. the rifle is already going to be big with a 26 inch barrel and a 15" length of pull on the stock. I could go to 300 H&H for no real extra cost....What to do? It is only being used on black bear, wild boar, and black-tailed deer for now. Most of the hunting is in wilderness and unroaded areas.

We have very similar tastes. I also have a '39 model 70. I had only been loading it with 4831 but your load is a temptation.

So what do you all feel is the best bullet weight for this caliber to take advantage of its unique characteristics.

200 to 220 grns .
the winnys (long and short) and 308 normas dont have a thing on the 300 H&H with the heavys .
in the Barnse manaul the H&H beats them with the 250 grn original.

If all you were going to shoot out of the old girl was 200-220 grain bullets (maybe a 180), what would the best twist be for a barrel?

1 in 10 is standard twistand it works good with 165-220grs bullets . 1 to 9 would work good too for the 200-220 grs and for the barnses Xs.
i did a little work with the 200gr barses triple shocks before i ran out of $.
mommy !!! they were giving me great groups with all powders tried . better than the 200 gr speer 200 Grandslam that does MOA in my pre-64

If I went with a 9 inch barrel what grain weights would I really be loosing due to instability?

The .300 Holland & Holland shows up alot here on this forum

We had a poll sometime ago, and some 45% were
shooting H&H over the "rest mags".
The old .300 has still an appeal to many people, and in many cases it`s the only magnum
one ever needs. The .300 Win has a slightly larger casecapacity, however when shooting the
220-250grain bullets, the Holland & Holland comes in strong for its long neck and suddenly
have a large boilerroom for gunpowder.
I use only one bullet from now on for my H&H, and that`s 220 grain Hornadys.

I have had an original pre 64 M70 in 300 H&H and I find it a troublesome cartridge to load for. Also the rifle is heavy and long.

I would much prefer to carry and shoot the modern 300 WSM to any 300 H&H.

Mine is just a collector now.

Handsome is as handsome does and the 300 H&H never was a good design.

S99, I see in the Gunsmith area you wouldn't mind getting rid of it too. I bet someone here would love it....
