Bare-Bones Rifle Battery
I baxically have a 4 rifle battery for worldwide hunting:
Custom 22 Hornet
Custom 280
Dakota 76 338winmag
416 Rigby
(I do have a 300winmag plastic/stainless for crap weather conditions but have yet to take anything other than a hog or two)
There was a similar thread at 24hour and as I stated there....I am done!

I can do it with two:
1 - .223 with hard ball (lots of penetration little meat damage) and UMC (blows up on contact and leaves a good sized hole in deer sized animals) ammo.
2 - 9.3x62 with an assortment of solids and softs.
Both cz's, both full stocks, both with scopes in quick release rings.

Yep. Bare Bones has it exactly right. Except that the 30/06 will work on everything up to the largest Kodiak bears (it will even work on them, but the .375 would be better) and everything in Africa except elephant, Cape buffalo, rhino, lion, and maybe eland. (I'm sure that all those animals have been successfully taken from time to time with the 30/06 too. But using it on them is stretching its capabilities a bit far.)

If I had to do it all with the least amount of Rifles in my battery , then it would go something like this .

22-250 / .223

7MM RM / 06

375 H&H /.50 Cal

Thankfully I have several in between to choose from .

Never had to carry that .50 very far and don't believe I would choose that for my light mountain arsenal !.

I already have a bare bones arsenal. It's damned tricky finding the time to meddle with load development, optics and all that jazz anyway.

1. .222Rem. This year I have used it for just about anything from crow to roe deer.
2+3. .308Win. When combined with a laser range meter, one can shoot at distances where you can't really use a superduper magnum either without a range meter.
4. 9,3x62, due to the lack of elephants in Sweden. If there were, or if I'd be about to hunt all over the world, I'd go for a .375HH instead. With hot loads and Nosler Ballistic Tips, the long range performance is impressive. With 286gr Norma Oryx, it's outright deadly too.

Bare bones?

#1. 22LR.
#2. 223 Rem (or similar)
#3. 7x57R/12g BBF.
#4. 28g O/U.

That would cover just about everything I'd be likely to hunt.

Cheers, Dave.

If I could have two it would be very similar. A .223 and either a .30-06 or 9.3x62. For what I tend to hunt, the .30-06 would probably get the nod. Including what I'd like to hunt, the 9.3 may get it.

I was actually going to try to answer this post but every time I try I argue myself out of my decisions before I can get them down. I am absolutely sure that if I had to pick just ONE caliber and rifle to do the rest of my hunting with it would be my Model 70 Classic Super Grade in .338 Win Mag ...unless it was possibly my .375 H&H but I guess my 30-06 or .300 Win. Mag. could do most or maybe all of it. Then I have this really nice little .223... Oh Hell boys - I'm not giv'in ANY of 'em up! Thats my decision an' it oughta be yours.

That'll take care of small and large game, and conflicts of most arisings. Throw in a 1911 with plenty of spare parts for all, two cases of cigs and a pile of car batteries and you're ready for ANYTHING!

That said, I prefer a 280 Rem M70 for big game, and my 358-404J 'cat when I want "more." A sharp-shooting M700 in 308 would make a lot of sense to pair with my FAL.
All depends on what you're aiming at, I suppose.
