Suggestions for rifles on 300 RSAUM bolt face
Remington's discontinuing their model 700 BDL's in the SAUM calibers. Deals all over the place for new m700's s/s from $379-400 new. I'm thinking about cannabalizing the action for a wildcat at that price. Any suggestions for calibers on this bolt face in the short action category?

If your after a wildcat then let your interest dicatate your choices.
Personally, I'd be most interested in a 25SAUM followed by a 35SAUM.
Cheers...

It is not a wildcat but a 300 WSM is a possibility with a little more volume for powder for a 100 more fps. I have a 300SAUM Sendero that shoots great and I was surprised to see REM offer the 300WSM in the 700 now and not the 300SAUM. I don't think the 300 SAUM would be much fun to shoot in the light Model 7. The recoil should be a little crisp.

I run a 338/300 wsm, you may kind of like to take a look at that for an idea?

My initial impressions were either to go smaller with a 6.5 WSM (supposedly very similar to the 6.5x284) or go big. From the stuff I've read, if you go to big (like 350 WSM and up) you lose too much powder capacity due to the size of the bullets and efficiency drops considerably. Mark, what kind of velocities/energy are you getting out of your .338 WSM?

I need another rifle like I need a hole in my head, but at $400 for a new s/s BDL, I'm gonna have to do it!

Why not just keep it in the caliber it comes in?

My bro has a 300 and loves it.

I agree with Doc,,,,300SAUM is a keeper as is. JMHO

I would keep it also, it will do eveything the 30-06 will do...Need I say more.

All in a nice tight package. Buy some dies and stock up on brass. You will be set for life because the 30 cal bullets are going nowhere.
Reload down a little for deer, for a nice pleasant shooter and reload up for bigger critters.

I just recently bought a 300WSM to change to a 6.5WSM, I may also pick up one of the 700's to do a short 22" heavy barreled 9.3mm WSM....

SO, my vote goes for 9.3mm (If you do it...can I borrow the reamer?? Wink)

I'm w/ Jon, a 6.5 RSAUM would be nice and it's neat to have a cart. alittle different than what everyone else has.

I have the Sendero in 300 SAUM and it's very accurate but the darn thing doesn't feed if you put more than one round in the Mag. I talked w/ a good smith and he told me how to fix the problem I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ok, Im in Mississippi also, where are all these deals you speak of? Cool

also, is a "belted magnum" (7mm rem mag, 338 win mag) bolt face the same size as the UM calibers? I noticed the base is a tad larger on the UM calibers.

I would do a 6.5WSM heavy barreled rig with a S/S fluted barrel and McMillan stock or leave it as it is and buy a lot of brass.

It's tempting at the low price, but in all honesty I'd probably pass. I did a .257WSM. At first I thought it was the coolest idea ever, but I became bored with it fast.

I'd go with a .257 SAUM first, .264 SAUM second if a 'cat is the itch.

Buy way more brass than you think you'll be needing though. Nate

TC1- I'm curious about your .257 WSM and the bordom. Need some relief?

When I built mine there was no such thing as a .270WSM so I had to use .300WSM brass and neck it down with collor dies, then turn the necks because the smith that built it thought it should have a tight neck (he thinks eveything should have tight neck if you don't spec it differently Roll Eyes). Anyway getting everything ready to shoot was a real pain in the butt. The rifle never feed very well and didn't hold but 2 down. After a few range sessions it hit me like a ton of bricks, sorta like that guy on the V-8 commercial. "Wow, I could'a had a .257WBY" bewildered This little rifle did nothing a .257WBY couldn't do and was a real pain in the butt to make ammo for. I sold it and bought a .257WBY and haven't looked back.

You might rechamber it for 300 WSM...

skid, deals all over the net, I just called my gunshop, told him what they were selling for, he ordered me one for $409 (Randy's in Hattiesburg). No shipping charges, no addl FFL charges, will be in this afternoon. I would suspect Van's could do the same for you, as dealer prices on these are way down (also the 7 SAUM I suspect)

In all honesty, I'll probably do a trigger job, then bed the stock and see how it shoots. If I get lucky with 1/2 MOA handloads, I'll keep it as is. If not, it's definetly gonna get chopped up for a WSM based wildcat. I'm hoping the WSM brass will be around for a lot longer (and I suspect it will, since even Remington is now chambering for the WSM cartridges) I've already got a .225, .243, 7mm RM, 7mm WSM, so a 30 cal wouldn't be that much of a difference, but a .338 would be a fun one.

The 325 WSM (8mm) is another interesting choice, especially if you handload. Factory bullets range from 125 to 250 grs and you can tune your loads to everything from varmints to griz. Some of the softer 8mm bullets designed for the 8mm Mauser will work great for reduced loads and unlike the 338 WSM wildcat, the ogives will work at COL 2.8 inches for the heavy bullets.

Thanks TC1, I have seriously been contemplateing a .257 or 6.5 WSM but it seems the .257 may be to overbore to be worth it. The 6.5 long throated may be quite the ticket. Nate

I have a 300 SAUM in a model 700BDL. It feeds better than my 300WSM but is just a bit slower (but not enough to say grace over.) Mine absolutely love the 168gr.Barnes Triple Shocks. It will darn near drive nails with these handloads H4350/Rem 9LR). This has proven to be a very successful light mountain elk rifle when outfitted with the Hitech stock and a Jewell trigger.

350 Rem Mag or how about a 416 Lockhart? Sean

Mine feeds fine but it did make some scratches on the brass and I noticed the top of the box was about 1/16 too high on the ramp. It is only about a 15 min job to fix with a round file and extra fine sandpaper and then reinstall. The spring loaded box is a pain in the butt to put back it but it is as slick as any other rifle that I have now.

I have a 300RSAUM in the 700LTR (Police Light Tactical Rifle)
Very accurate rifle
I shoot in the .5's consistenly and have put a couple in the .3's. Good enough for me.

Only thing I have done to it is have the trigger worked and run Tubbs Final Finish through the barrel

Im going on a hunt for one of these closeouts

Got mine in last week, I've already reworked the trigger... got brass and bullets incoming. I was going to pillar bed and skim the action, but it may not be worth it on the plastic stock. Prices have gone up over the past week as dealers have sold out, but there's still a few to be had on gunbroker. Now if I could just find a Sendero 300 saum on closeout.

Last night I saw a 300 SAUM Sendero Stainless Fluted on closeout $649 @ Tanners Sports Center, Jamison PA 215-343-1600.
Buy the damned thing before I do.

yes,..the bolt face for the WSM and Rem SAUM is nominally .532"...same as all other belted mags.

I had SAUMs in Model Sevens, both 7mm and 300...the 300 is a great cartridge, getting an easy 3100 with a 168 Interbond out of the 22" tube. Mine was a stainless M7 that I put into a 673 stock. Nice combo that Remmy doesn't offer. The 7mm SAUM was nothing to write home about...getting the same velocity as a 7mm-08 Ackley that I also had at the time....3000 with a 140...

the Belted Mag's are generally 0.531-0.532
The Rem SAUM's 0.534
And the WSM 0.535.

Basically not enough to notice.

I find it interesting that the differences in capacity and SAAMI pressure allows the 300WSM to place above the 300H&H an the Rem300SAUM
just below it.

Switching from the now orphaned 300SAUM to the soon to be orphaned 300WSM looks like a few minutes work with a finishing reamer and a headspace guage. (Please don't step in the
drying sarchasm)

All I can say is whatever your choice stock up on brass SOON, don't wait until they start closing that out or you'll be left with an empty shopping cart.

Though it is nice to see a discount on a discontinued remington while all the speculators are busy grabbing up winchesters
(Oops! more dry sarchasm...)

If an accurate rechambering job can be done without removing the barrel it seems like a fine way to get into a 300 WSM at a good price. AS for orphans, the 300 WSM might lose its namesake but of all the 404 based short wide bottles it seems to have legs. Time will tell...

I bought my first 300SAUM to use as a donor for a WSM but decided to shoot it first because it came with dies, brass, and some loaded ammo.

I've been shooting and reloading for nearly 40 years now and was so impressed that I now have replaced the 308 Winny with the 300RSAUM as my favorite cartridge.

I can easily load down to 308 velocities and right up to (nearly) 300 Winny with excellent accuracy.

I now own a Model 7SS, a Sendero SF, and Remmy Titanium in 300SAUM and all three are well under 3/4 inch in accuracy at a hunnert, and all three are box stock with only minor trigger tweaking!!!!!

Make mine a 300SAUM!!!

LDHunter,

How much does the Remmy Titanium in 300SAUM weigh w/ scope? And what kind of scope & mounts?

I think you should at least shoot the 300 and see what it does before canabalizing it.

Remmy lists it at 6 3/8th pounds which is pretty light considering it has a 24" magnum contour barrel.

Titanium 300SAUM

The scope is a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 Firefly that weighs in at a hefty 16oz and I use Weaver aluminum bases and Burris Signature Zee rings.

I know there are much lighter scopes around but I just can't get over how much I like the Elite 4200's and the Firefly reticle.

I haven't weighed the whole package but I guess it'd be around 8 pounds with a mag well full of Nosler 180's and a lightweight sling.

My ULTRALIGHT elk pounder is one of these in 350 Rem Mag. It wears Tally lightweight rings and a 3-9 Leupy Lightwieght scope which should tip the scales a good bit south of 7 pounds with a mag well full of 250gr Partitions and a padded sling.
