LH M70 price check
Any guess on LH New Haven 06 in excellent condition?

After lots of looking, I would buy it. Sportsman's Legacy has several and is asking $4,500 and up for custome shop LH Model 70s.

I would say $1,000 or more if the rifle is in good condition. I just picked one up off GI but that’s the first one I’ve seen in a while.

I also prefer the earlier version with the red recoil pad. I think they were finished a little nicer.

I haven’t seen as many 270/06 lefty M70s available as I have the magnum bolt face actions. I have bought 2 lefty M70s as projects in the last year and neither was more than $1k-$1200. One in 7 Mag in decent condition for $995 and a 375 Super Express for $1100. Having said that they are worth what somebody is willing pay for one.

The LH custom shop rifles at Sportsman’s Legacy are way overpriced in my opinion unless you put some collectors value on the “custom shop” or “first lefty actions”.

A mass produced Winchester LH standard bolt face are becoming more scarce and they should as time goes by. Some are good and some are not. $1,150- 1,400 is the going price. You can occasionally get lucky with a lower priced one, but not the norm. You take your chances on how much it would take to get them where you need them. They have cheap plastic stocks, the wooden variety are a hit and miss. Barrels were slapped together at the machinery’s end of life. Many were threaded off kilter etc...
If you buy them with plans of alteration, double your expected final cost or better to triple. Never mind the time.
A few days ago I noticed on ebay a Win. LH std. bolt face for sale for $99. Don’t know if it’s still there. Needs little polish but the substance is there.
The Custom Shop Gun is in a different league. Many think it’s a slightly beautified rifle, that doesn’t justify the money and think it’s basically the same. How many have actually owned them to lay judgment. No pun on anybody.

The Win. CSG is in a different league. It is built to the customer’s order/wishes. Their most talented gunsmiths worked there. The barrels are usually Kreigers or other top end makers. Accuracy is superb. The actions are blue printed, engine turned, trued...the stocks were either Mcmillan Or walnut of various grades. The fit and finish is superior and evident. Engraving is another story.
A synthetic, stainless steel version in clean condition, is a steal at $2,800. A wooden version at $3,800 at the most basic and up. Depending on wood character and embellishment.

The Sportsman’s Legacy CSG’s were part of a consecutive serial number versions and they wanted to sell the lot to a collector starting in the $70k range and later dropping the price to eventually disbanding the idea of selling them together. Their problem is you are stuck to certain calibers that few want. Since they are of the walnut variety, over all, they are basic at best.

I had three and down to one. Mine has eye pleasing wood and better grade with an extra Mcmillan super grade stock. It is well worth the $4,500 range.

It comes down to beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When the right person see’s it, appreciates it and wants it. With the right size wallet, it will go home wit him.

The most comprable rifle to the Win. CSG is the Dakota 76 rifle.

How can you tell a custom shop m70 from a regular one?

Well it sounds like you can tell by the $3000 difference in price. As the father of a lefty I will not go custom shop.

I agree. I had no trouble passing them up. But... I have not seen any others for sale lately.

I did buy a LH Dakota 76 and a LH Ruger 77 mrkII for cheap recently.

A Winchester Custom Shop Gun will have a CSG proof stamp on top of the barrel very close to the receiver. Some came with certificates from the Winchester Custom Shop. They also had low number serial numbers.
The bottom line is, go hunt and enjoy some of life’s treasures. Hunt with whatever you like and where you like. It is always your choice, no judgment period.
Some like Honda’s and some BMW’s. Don’t let the vehicle stop you from reaching your destination.

I look at the lefty M70s as great CRF project platforms...the problem is that when you start approaching $2k the Dakota 76s start becoming viable substitutes. I recently picked up a LH Dakota 76 in 450 Dakota for a steal as well. No disrespect to the custom shop guns as I know they are different animals but for me I have a 15” LOP so most stocks don’t fit without a stack of spacers so at best I’m buying a barreled action.

You beat me to it! I have no need for it but at that price it was a no brainer. As my wife says...it was on sale so I had to buy it.
