My latest fun rifle, a small ring mauser barreled in 7.62x39, has hinged floor plate and converted to cock on open.

As you stated this is a G33/40, Modified Mil. stock with a home grown cheek piece and a 3 to 9 power Simmon's scope. The heavey barrel was used just to acquire better accuracy. The cartridge delivers bullets at a greater energy level than a 30-30, has modest recoil and reaches out farther than I can accurately shoot anymore.

Scope block heater?

I am happy this morning guys! My little FR-8 project I posted a picture of on page 2 is coming along great. I got it screwed back together this weekend, and test fired it yesterday zeroing the scope. Shot it twice at 70 yards and it literally put both shots through the same hole. Yeah, I know, probably luck, but a good omen nonetheless. Backed up to 100 and it put two less than an inch apart, and this is just a mild generic load, no development. Looks like it may have potential.

I'm pretty stoked, this is my first ever attempt at rebarreling myself. I don't have alot of fancy tools either, just having to go slow and be careful, trying to really think everything through good before I do anything. It has taken awhile, and I am really happy it looks like I did okay. It probably doesn't seem like much to alot of you guys, but for a po-boy with a cheap lathe and not many tools it was a big step for me. I cut the stock this morning to put a forend tip on it, should have the stock refinished this week. I will post up before and after pics as soon as I am done.

Nice work on alot of these other rigs also guys! I second the motion about this being a favorite thread. I always come look at this one to see what other folks are doing. Keep the pics coming guys!

Here is my working gun. A true joy to hunt with. More than 100 years old and going strong. Gotta love those old sporterized 30-40 kargs! The action is so smooth and quick. Even for me shooting it left handed




I have an old redfield peep sight I want to add to this one before next deer season. Along with a new front sight. Should make it even better.

Nice Krag, but I'd retain the original sights.

How about this Lon Paul sporterized SMLE in 348 Win. With 250 gr Woodleighs @ 2300fps it should work on just about anything you wish.

Lon Paul doesn't get near the recognition he should.

It's great to see the old "smellies", for those of us in the commonwealth countries it was the original working rifle, and its still very much in use today.I currently have them in 257 roberts rimmed;7x57R; 45-70; 303-35; and of course 303 british.

Lon is still waiting for some 270 gr Hawk bullets and I imagine the rear sight still needs to be filed in before being blued.

That G33/40 has given me some great ideas for a "truck gun"..

I just obtained two VZ-24 rifles in (catch this) 7 X 57.....and this thread sure has planted ideas for a new truck gun using the original barrel.

Okay, finally got my FR-8 back together. Action, of course, is a FR-8, and is stamped La Coruna 1952. Had the bolt handle turned down and action drilled for scope. I replaced the factory safety with a Sunny Hill shroud, and added a Bold Optima trigger with side safety. Barrel is a stainless 7x57 McGowan that was a takeoff from a different project in the past, length is 20.5". Scope is a Burris Fullfield 2x7 with ballistic-plex reticule.

Stock came with the original rifle and was pretty butchered up when I got it. It is curly maple with some pretty decent figure, but has had too much taken off of it in several places, and so is relegated to beater rifle status. Had to put a forend tip of Bocote on there to get some length back, and try and restore some balance to it.

Mainly I built this thing up with what I had laying around or got in trades, I have maybe $300 in it. It is going to be my "drag it through nasty brush" rifle for hogs and deer.

At the moment I'm working on an LSA action that I originally received with a 303-25 barrel fitted and a butt stock only.Eventually this will become a Lee Speed style rifle in 303-35, but in the meantime I decided to tart the old girl up a bit with a reshaped stock,modify the magazine,some new sights and my first attempt at checkering.
I've recut the chamber to 257 Roberts and use 7x57 rimmed cases.This cleans up a doubtful chamber, the brass is easier to get and is of better quality and there is no need to modify the magazine for feeding.
In the photo's below, the stock is a replica military stock, which, unfortunately for what I want, has lots of little cut-outs for sights and discs ,etc.so I'm not so worried about cutting it up.

2 98 Krags

I converted two mausers. One is a 223 rem, on a 33/40 action. still playing with the feeding of the small 223, in a full size 98 action. The other is a 338-06 on a 1909 argentine action.
havent got around to blueing it yet, but took two mule deer with it, in its shiny clothing.
They both shoot real good.

It has been a long time to get my .300 H&H into shooting shape but it is finally done.

Went from this modified military stock with military trigger and B&L 2-7X35 Elite 3000 scope:


To this roughed out Richard's Microfit stock, and replaced trigger with a Timney. Stock had more problems than I was comfortable fixing so took it to Kevin Weaver and he shaped and bedded the stock for me, but left the rest for me to finish up later:


Finally to this Minwax antique oil finish, Minwax polyeurthane sealer, Leupold VXIII 2.5-8X36:





I have finally shot this rifle. Picked up some factory Winchester or so I thought, but the rifle wouldn't group better than 4". Pulled all the bullets and powder from the ammunition. Boxes were labled 180 grain but the bullets actually weighed in at 148.8-151.5 grains and the powder charge ranged from 0 grains in once case but the rest were 69-72 grains. Probably why my groups were all over the place and probably not factory.

I reused the bullets and powder but now every thing has a 70 grain charge. And since most of the bullets were within .5 grains of 150 I just took out the extreme ones. I'm going back to the range today to see if I can get it to group better. I got a good deal on the ammo so I'm not too upset it not being factory, brass looked brand new and unfired inside. $40 for 40 rounds, can't even buy new .300 H&H brass that cheap.

I'm going to load this rifle up though for hunting elk. I will be more than likely using 200 grain Nosler Partitions come hunting season. Since this rifle has a long 26" barrel I'll be looking at those slow burning powders to get max velocity out of it.

Just got back from Snellstrom's private range. Think this rifle is a keeper! She shot pretty good today had 19 rounds to play with after pulling bullets and reusing the componets. I shot one fouler shot to the right then I put three shots at the bullseye. Wound up 3" high and a pretty awesome three shot group. I had put no thought into my reloading. Just wanted to get onto paper so I could start loading up some 200 grain loads. Shot the next 10 rounds popping 20 oz coke bottles filled with water I'd set up for shooting with my varmint rifles. Went back to 275 yards and rang the 8" gong 5 out of 5 tries from the bench with no holdover.

I paid 50 cents for this turk mauser. I put on a takeoff barrel from a match rifle. It's a 6.5 mm krieger barrel. It's chambered for 6.5-o6. The stock is from Calico Hardwoods, it's one of those advertised in shotgun news, $50.00.

It's not perfect, but it was my first mauser build. I had a lot of help from a gunsmith, we made the hinged floorplate from the original bottom metal, buffed and blued the action, shaped and finished the stock.

All together, I have around $250 in the gun.

Here's a VZ-24 in 30-06 that I did a number of years ago as a first project. I have since replaced the forged bolt handle with a Tally like the Swede has, reshaped the triggerguard and tang area, and am working on a nicer piece of walnut for it.

Here's a 1909 Argie I picked up at a gunshow just yesterday. Can't tell in this crummy photo, but it has some mild fiddleback. Not exactly sure what I'll do with this one yet.

I picked up a scope mount at a gunshow last weekend for $30, rings for $45, and an M8 2.5x compact Leupold....... at a garage sale for $5, had a bit of a play with it and here it is!
Still needs some stock work ( the fore end tip is felt pen... ) and a butt plate, but its getting there.........

I couldnt figure out how to post a picture,
but one of my favorite take for a walk guns is a 6.5 carcano a friend and I barreled to 35 rem. turned the bolt handle, put some marble sights on and throated out to handle spitzers and cast bullets. Total cost with the take off barrel and used sights, $65!

That's pretty much what I'm trying to do. Is it one of these: Uncle Mike's at Midway USA?

They don't look like they connect all the way at the top.
