Today I found a new Win model 70 in .300 RUM for under $500. I wasn't really shopping for a new rifle, and have never fired the .300 Ultra Mag.

It's a great looking rifle, classic stock, nice wood, 26" barrel with a nice blue job.

I generally hunt with an old 1917 .30-06, sometimes a .45-70 Marlin. Also have a 7mm mag Sendero that's a long range tack driver, but heavy and awkward enough that it usually stays home.

I generally hunt mule deer in pretty open country, with an occasional trip for black bear or elk.

Thoughts on buying this .300 RUM? I really like the rifle! Regards, Guy

The recoil is going to be really mean. If you can take the kick without flinching give it a try.

I looked at the loads for it and other .300 magunums in the Nosler #5 and the .300 RUM does not seem to get the 180 gr much over 3200 fps. Most much smaller .300 mags come close to that.

This means that the cartridge is overbore as Parker Ackley would call it.

My VT snowplow guy has one. He shot some poor buck four times with it. This is a guy who gets his deer.

Me? I am going to pass on the RUM's.

I have a 300 RUM in a remington rifle. I get 3375 FPS with 180 gr Nosler BT's, thats not at my max load but it is my most accurate load. If you look at the loads Saeed built up in the reloading pages he was getting over 3400 FPS.

It was my first rifle so it got me used to recoil pretty quick. But still after about 25 rounds at the range I kind of don't want to shoot it anymore. I don't see how a guy could go wrong with one though especially if its a controlled round feed M 70.

My own custom 300ultramag produces just under 3400fps with 180gr handloads.I have taken four elk,two moose and one whitetail with seven shots and am totaly impressed with the cartridge.

What powder, charge wt and OAL are you using on that load if you don't mind me asking?

I was getting 3345 fps with 96.5 and 97.0gr RL25 at 3.660" OAL with no pressure signs.

The Oehler 43 indicated 70,000 psi with both loads though. I found best accuracy between 91.0 and 93.5gr at 3200 fps at 62,300-62,900psi. The 180 Scirocco indicated the same results too but it's BC was measured at .576 and the BTs at .524. at 300 yards with an acoustic target.

buy the Ultra and don't look back.

It's a blast to shoot. It doesn't kick THAT much harder than your 7mm. You are however shooting a much more powerfull rifle and recoil is more. You'd be amazed at how many people I have shot with that hold their rifle to their shoulder, but not TIGHT to the shoulder and as a result swear their 7mm's and 338's beats the crap out of them. They ARE!

I am using 95 grains of Reloader 25 with nosler Bt's. For a while I was shooting moly coated bullets but never checked velocity with those rounds.

I am seating the bullets at a little longer than 3.600" just so I can get them into the magazine easily

Elevation is around 2000 feet if you think that matters much. No idea what the temps were when I was cronographing.

I think you will like it and will be glad to know that the Recoil isn't any where near like some would have you to believe.Winchesters that I have shot don't have no where near the Recoil of
the same Caliber Remingtons. Congrats on the New Rifle.

guy - buy the rifle! I shoot and reload for both the 300 and the 338 Ultra and they're good shooters. My sons 300 Ultra is in a Mod 70 Super Grade and it shoots 200 Noslers at 3130 fps under an inch @100 yards. The caliber is a great hunting round with good heavy bullets. The recoil of his rifle is just a little more than our 300 Winnies with the same bullets - very tolerable. That's a great buy and you'll like it. Good luck,

Buy the 300 RUM, I bought a Mod 70 Super Grade this past summer. Started playing around with the 165gr. Par. and RL-22, came up with a load that gave me solid 3.0" groups at 300yds. Recoil was a little more than I was use to but overcame that pretty quick. Shot 2 deer with it last month, both right at 250yds., both dropped on the spot. I like mine!!

Definitely buy it! I have a M700 300RUM loaded with 180 gr Nosler Partitions and 83.0 gr of IMR 4350. I worked up to this hot load, so don't start here. 4350 isn't the most ideal powder (doesn't give the high velociites), but I have a ton of it that I want to use up and it has given me some pretty good results so far. Anyway, I have it pushing around 3200fps. I took three large whitetail this year, 1 at 470yds, 1 at 340yds, and 1 at 160yds. Every one of them dropped where they were standing. No movement whatsoever following the hit. I was disappointed that I didn't get to shoot more.
As for recoil, it can be a bit heavy off a bench. In the field when the adrenaline is flowing, you won't even notice it.

I have a Mod 700 Sendero 300 rum I love it I shoot 112gr acc.8700 @ 3410 avg.No press.signs I can see It does have a big push.I dont think you will go wrong.
