I have a new haven lh m70 in 30 06. could it be rechambered to the 300 H&H? if so, what is involved? I understand the bolt face mod and the feeding but I mean the barrel specifically.

It is possible to rechamber, but instead of modifying a standard bolt face, you might want to look at gunbroker. There is a seller who has a magnum face bolt for sale ( http://www.gunbroker.com/item/616047244). Then you wouldn't have to ruin a perfectly good standard action bolt. I realize it may add some work to the change, but the standard face left hand Model 70s are tough to come by. Maybe trade into a 7 mag or 300 mag and use the extra money to get it rebarreled? Just a couple of thoughts...

If you're looking for added performance why not simply re-chamber to 30-06 AI?

If you're looking only for shooting the 300 H&H, for various reasons known only to you, then carry on.

A friend has a pre 64 model 70 in 300 HandH . He gets 3 fireings on factory ammo of new brass . Unfortunately his old man gave him the rifle so my efforts to get him to rebarrel it to 375 HandH arent being met with a good reception.

Also, is the N.H. 06 action long enough for the 300. ??

The simple answer is YES...
1.Open the bolt face.

2. modify the bolt stop

3.Take the spacer out of the magazine..

4.Rechamber

5.Good idea to make a cut in the rear bridge of the loading port, I know it needs this on a pre 64, but not sure on the newer model you speak of.

6.Check for feed and function,may need to test the feeding, always a good idea.


I recommend Dennis Olson, Plains Mt. for the job. He does good work and won't break the bank.
However as suggested it might be best to trade your gun in on a new or used one in that caliber??? sometimes it is.

It would be far less hassle to sell or trade for a New Haven magnum bolt face action. All you really should need to do is remove the spacer behind the follower, change bolt stops and rebarrel. A new follower might be needed, but maybe not. Just see how it feeds as is. You won't need to open up the action at all. However, if you can locate a factory original 7mm STW, only a rebarrel is needed, for sure, and the rear bridge is open a little more, which is just a little more user friendly when loading.
