7 mauser action length
I was wondering what the correct action length for the 7x57 is? I can not be certain but I had thought I read somewhere that teh 7x57 is a mite long for the SA and a mite short for the LA.

Long for the SA means you can't seat heavier bullets out -- COL is limited.

So what do the expurts say?

I have a tang Ruger LA that would be a candidate for a Pac-Nor barrel in said caliber - any problem with using it? its an 30-06

The 7 X 57 fits fine in a '98 mauser....and most long actions.

I'd not try to stuff it in a short action rifle.

Ditto. If memory serves correct, the overall length is 3.00"

Cool, that Ruger may just go to Pac-nor. Just wish it was a MKII.

Loonie,

You are correct. The intermediate length Mauser 98 action is the correct size for a 7x57. It is often referred to as a Type C rifle.

However, among commercial non-mauser actions, any long action suitable for the .30-06 will do just fine. You will most likely have some extra room in the magazine.

Extra space to seat them long - I can dig it. I wonder if anyone makes VLD type bullets in 7 mm Smiler

To put it in perspective, the 06 is 63mm long and the 308 is 51mm placing the 7X 57 right inbetween. I believe that mauser made them in both standard and intermediate length actions. A former 06 action should feed it well. You might try a few dummy loads first to find out if it feeds ok before taking the leap.

Personally, if I were building a 7X57 Id put it in a Mauser action. Peas & carrots.. Nothing wrong with a good ruger though.

Forgive my ignorance, but, what length is an intermediate Mauser action??

Ya might just buy yorself a MK 2 Ruger in 7X57,
I think they still chamber it. Would probably be cheaper than a rebarrel.
Then you would still have your 06...tj3006

I own three 7 x 57s, and all on long actions....

2 Ruger 77 Mk 2s and one Winchester Featherweight....and all long throated...

Keeping it long throated, I think would be good advise and seat your bullets out to magazine length... its velocity potential like that will surprise you, competing with a 280 easily...which they say competes with a lot of 7 Rem Mags.. with less recoil by a bunch....

An intermediate lenght action has a bolt stroke which is about 5mm shorter as the standard one.
Magazine lenght intermediate = 79mm = 3.11"
Magazine lenght Standard = 84mm = 3.30"
without modification.

A 7X57 will fit perfectly into the intermediat action, because cartridge lenght even with the longest 173 grains bullet do not exed 78 mm = 3.08".
