jro4530/06 shoots the 165 gr bullets
I'm going to the range today to find out how many FPS the 165 gr bullets will go out of my 30/06 with a 25" barrel. I will report back. How fast do they go out of your 30/06?

vapodogRight close to 2,950

Double AA2940 fps. 22" barrel, Reloader 19.

BFaucett2800+/- using IMR-4350, 22" barrel. (2 different Ruger M77s.)
I don't try to hotrod the .30-06. I'm happy with the .30-06 factory ammo spec level of velocities. If I need more "ummph" than that, then I can use my .338 Win Mag.
With your 25" barrel, my
guess is that it should be easy to get 2900-2950 fps.

Gerryjro,
Have fun and hope you get some good velocity at the range with your long-barreld Boomer but recognize the .30/06's limitations.
I agree with BobF. 100%!
Some folks get lucky with barrels that give up a few extra fps with a given load - fantastic and I've gotten some suprisingly good velocity myself from a coupla good 165 gr. Nosler Partition loads in my .30/06, too!
Just buy the newest .300 Whizz-Bang if you want the fastest .308 bullets down range; I personally don't try making a .30/06 Sprg. into a .300 Winchester, Weatherby or H&H Magnum.

LWDI agree with Bob and Gerry except that I reach for my 375H&H instead.
May I ask where you got a .30-06 with a 25" barrel? Is it a custom job? That's an unusual barrel lenght for this cartridge.

Dave HydeI agree with you all, but I cannot take the recoil of the beasts that you state. I lost ny rt shoulder to a HVP in 1970. The 06 is the best I can handle and that is painfull. I tend to go to the meager .308. I love to shoot and I would like to shoot all the stuff you guy talk about, but...... I can only do what I can do. To me, 06 and 308 are the best I can do.

LittleloadingblockIf you are just after deer. You could even go with something with a little less kick than your 308 and 30-06. The 6.5 rounds as well as the 257 rounds all make fine deer slayers. No point beating the crap out of yourself. I love getting new rifles as much as the next guy but if I had an condition which brought me to tears everytime I pulled the trigger I would have to rethink my hunting arms. In fact i just got my first magnum An interarms 300 wm. I have yet to fire it, but those 180's rolling out at 2850+ or so should give me a nice little kick. But you should be able to easily get 2800+ with 165's in the 30/06.
I also have no need to hotrod my 30-06. It does just fine harvesting animials without it!
I go for consistant loads that are acxcurate instead.

jro45Well they went 2910 FPS. Not bad for a 25" barrel. I used a load from Steves Loads.

BFaucettA 165 gr bullet at 2900 +/- in the .30-06..... Life is good... Be happy. That's really very close, in regards to trajectory, to a .270 Win shooting 130-140 gr bullets. Yeah, the .270 will be a little flatter shooting but not by much. If it's a fairly accurate load, then I think you've found an excellent general purpose load for your rifle.
Cheers!
