I'm thinking of restocking one of my 700s and I'm looking pretty hard at Bell & Carlson's stocks right now.

Do you think the Medalist or the Carbelite Classic would be the best.

The Medalist has the aluminum bed block but, I'm not sure that would be a great advantage.

I've also considered the Thumbhole design they offer but, I've never owned a rifle w/ a thumbhole stock.

What are you planning on using the rifle for?

I've never been a fan of thumbhole stocks, and have *really* never liked them on a big game carrying rifle.

To me, they just say "bench shooter", not "field rifle".

I would opt for the medalist as it is a more stable platform. You may wish to look for a used HS Precision as well. Either stock will be a good one.

It will be on a hunting rifle. I will spend several sessions at the range w/ it but, it's primary function will be to tackle Bullwinkle.

The only Bell and Carlson stock I own does not have the bedding block but was pillar bedded by a competent gunsmith. It is a great stock and never changes point of impact.

If I were buying a new Bell and Carlson and were not going to have a gunsmith bed it I would opt for the model with the bedding block.

Having said that, I own five H-S Precision stocks and think they are the best thing out there today. The bedding block in those stocks makes them work quite well as simple drop-in equipment.

I simply do not like thumbhole stocks and would not consider one on a hunting rifle. For varmints or target shooting maybe.

I put an HS Precision stock on my wife's M700 in .270, and it was truly a drop in fit. No fiddling required, and it now shoots true sub-moa groups which it never did before. She's hunted with it in Canada, USA, NZ, and Africa and has been completely satisfied with it.

How much do you want to spend?

I like H-S Precision, McMillan, and Rimrock from Jim Borden. Brown also makes a nice stock. I do not know enough about Bell and Carlson to make recommendation.

I have used H-S Precision stocks with the bedding block,but I do prefer the mcmillans and mine are pillar bedded.Several gunbuilders actually prefer to bed the stocks that have the aluminum bedding blocks.

You might want to check E-Bay. There were about four of those HS Precision Stocks on there the last time I looked. Tom PUrdom

of all my customs,..I have yet to diffinitively prove that a bedded mcmillan is better than a bedded HS Precision. I have heard it time and again,...

maybe my smith knows something most others don't

The HS Precision w/ Accra Glass bedding tightened up groups. This rifle went from shooting .6s-.7s to shooting 1/2 inchers. I wouldn't hesitate buying another HS stock in the future.
