New project........
I took this in on trade for labor. Going to restock it as is. Its a Pre-war Mod 70. Rechambered in .35 Whelen. The chamber and bore are outstanding. The rifle itself has been used very little.

Wow what a beauty!

If possible could you post some close up pics?

Why is it that I never come across rifles like that? [Frown]

Bill,

Could you tell us a little more of what you know about how that rifle was converted to .35 Whelen? I have been thinking about a pre-64 M70 in that caliber and am interested in how that rifle was done. Was it rebarreled? Rebored? Is the barrel contour stock (no matter the origin of the barrel) and was the barrel channel redone?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Bob,

It is the orginal barrel. Integral front ramp and all. It would appear that it has just been re-chambered. The barrel contour is original. I compared it to another pre-war in 30-06. They are identical. Hope that answers your questions. [Smile] Btw - I will be selling the original stock at some point if anyone is interested.

Bill,

Thanks for the pics!

What a sweet rifle. Love the clover leaf tang and 3 pos saftey on the pre war M70s.

You said you got the rifle on a trade for work?
Please tell this guy I'll paint his house if he has another he'll part with... [Smile]

If only Winchester produced them as well today.

Dave

I wonder if it started life as a .35Rem? Unless I'm having a brain cramp I think that's the only .35 cal cartridge that they chambered those for. Any indication of the original chambering being stamped on the barrel? Interesting conversion if that's the case...

Ray,

When you swap a stock on the pre-64 M70 what kind of prep do you do on the "new" stock to be used? Or, do you basically handle it as a "drop-in"? The reason I ask is that I have a .30-06 that has had the stock cut and a pad added (which in and of itself doesn't bother me), but the LOP was left shorter than I would prefer. I would like to eventually get a stock that is in its original configuration and replace the one that is on the rifle now.

Thanks,
Bob
