TSX Expansion at low vel
I am considering switching to the 165 or 180 gr TSX for my elk load in 300 Win Mag. I know they hold together well at high velocity, but how well do they expand at low velocity (2000-2200 fps)?

Excellently. I took two bucks weekend before last with a 7x57 that is just creeping along with the 140 TSX. Hit both at about 2200fps and both mushroomed/X'ed perfectly. Barnes engineer, Ty Hearing, told me over the phone the TSX will expand reliably down to 1700 fps.

Please explain why you would want to download a 300 wm to 2200? Just curious?

I would guess he is more intersted in shooting something "way-out" there where velocity is down to 2000.

Velocity at 500 yards is close to 2200 fps with the most accurate load in my rifle.

Barnes claims useable expansion is down around 1800 fps... I'm of the opinion 2000 fps is the more uesful/realistic bottom end. Regardless, the 165/68's are plenty in a 300. Truth is, past 500 yards the 180's will retain more velocity. I'd use whichever shot best between 165's/180's...
