7mm STW Loads
Thanks to MADDOG I will soon have a Winchester 70 in 7mm STW Smiler. I will only be deer hunting this fall but wanted to hear some good loads for the 160 grain Accubond and 175 grain Partition. From what I have read the popular opinion is that the 160 grain outshines the 175 grain even though the difference in sectional density. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I load the 160accubond in all my larger 7mm cases. Took it to Africa and taken 30-40 animals from small deer to Kudu and elk. I see no reason to use the 175. I used both the 160 & 140 in my 7STW they worked great.

As usual just my $.02

My 7STW shoots 160gr Accubonds in nice little groups with 77.0grs of Reloader-22.

Just a note that is 4grs over Noslers and Alliants max so approach with caution. First bottle of RL22 I had would have blown the case apart long before I reached 77grs.

I would concur on this.....

BTW....77 grains is almost 5 grains over the Hornady manual as well

I had one years ago and sold it (like an idiot) and wish I had it back now.....alas

When I had mine I loaded 160s with H-1000 and at a max of about 78 grains.

Double check any load data you get from the internet....anyone can make a typo!

Those manuals have the 7STW loaded waaaaay down. The 77.0grs is still a little below max in my rifle. And yes,it's true one must work their way up slowly because every rifle is different.I blame the loading down on Remington and their 7mm Ultra Mag.Same thing has happened to the 7mag too.

The 2005 Alliant manual shows the following:
7STW 160gr Nosler Partition 79.0grs Reloader-22 3,300fps 62,300psi
160gr Swift A Frame 80.0grs Reloader-22 3,300fps 62,200psi

I'm getting 3160fps with 77.0grs of Reloader-22.I stopped right there because I was getting great groups.

The Alliant loads look a little warm to me.I usually load 80.0grs of Reloader-22 for 139-150gr bullets and that's about max for the 150's @ 3450fps.

take it for what it's worth....most manuals have the 7STW loads watered down. I run H1000 w/ 150g TTSX. It's hot, fast and accurate.

With 140g, I'd start with IMR7828 followed by RL22. With 160g boolits, I'd run H1000 and never look back.
