Model 70 age?
Im wondering how to find the age of a Model 70 winchester I have had for awhile now. The serial number is G1903931.

Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics; even if you win, you're still retarded.

If its a mod 70 pre 64 the date will be marked on the underside of the barrel...

Laner,

The G prefix identifies it as a post 1970 rifle, all model 70's after that start with "G".

My book stops in 1981, with sn range of G159xxx. It is probably a 1984 maybe a 83.

Something else most of the folks here are honest, but when you post SN's on line you should "xx" out the last couple of digits, its not a good idea to post a complete serial number of any firearm on line.

I have always wondered why.

I was thinking that myself after I typed it. I don't really think like a criminal, but a good example is something like it being used on a fraudulent insurance claim. I am sure someone who is dishonest could think of creative ways to abuse it. Nothing might ever come of it but it seems like being careless to me, and I don't need additional complications I wasn't expecting.

Edit: who would have ever thought that somebody could have figured out a scam with a cutoff fingertip, but look at that gal that was just sentenced on the Wendy's scam. The are at lot of preditors out in the wide wide world and I figure a little caution never hurts.

Someone who sees a complete serial number, along with a description of the rifle and perhaps your hometown could claim the rifle was stolen from him sometime in the past. At least that is what I was told could happen.
