12gage300 rum
I have a model 700 .3oo rum and starting to reload for it. I like to shoot the barnes tsx solid copper bullets. I would like to seat off the lands about 20k but it seems like the bullet is sticking out way to far out.Its at 5 tenths over what the barnes manual says is max overall length. Any suggestions?? Im a novice so any advice is appreciated.

FjoldBarnes recommends a jump of .050" for the TSX and I've found that on my 6.5x284, 7mm Mag and 375 H&H that they are correct. I get my best accuracy using the TSX with a long jump to the lands.

Buliwyf1. Don't worry about what the Barnes manual states(could be typo). Let your rifle tell you what it wants.
2. Make a dummy cartridge: no primer and no powder. Partial neck size and seat bullet into lands by dropping dummy into chamber and closing bolt - there will be resistance closing bolt on dummy so use common sense feeling the pressure. May have to seat bullet a liitle more with your press and seating die.
3. Feed the dummy from the magazine to check that .020" off lands feeds from magazine. Seat bullet deeper as needed. If the Sweet Spot seating depth is too long for the magazine then just single feed when you shoot longer range.

BISCUTHow does it compare to your chamber? Do you have a way to measure it? If not look for a Stony Point/Hornady OAL gage. They make a 300RUM case. My specific 300RUM (REM 700 CDL) gives a much longer than book COL.
IMHO reloading manuals offer a baseline. You must get to know your specific rifle.
What powder are you using? I have had great luck with RL25 and 200gr Accubonds. Working on Retumbo.
Back to reloading --- the 300RUM is hard on brass. I anneal every 2nd firing and can get a good number of hot reloads before the neck splits. I suggest you read up on it and give it a shot.
Since you are new to reloading I would think about trying a different bullet first. Maybe 175gr Sierra Match King. Dial that in, get some experience, and then move to the more expensive bullet. Besides, the TSX may need more of a jump than what I believe you were saying -- 20k?

12gagedoes it matter if the grooves on the bullet are sitting out of the case? The factory rounds are seated all the way down without the grooves showing. Thanks for all the input!!!

GerryNo it doesn't matter if any or parts of the grooves are out of the neck of the case.

Similar to factory loads I've obtained the best results in 300 RUM & 300 Win. Mag. with the bullets seated to the first groove (closest to the bullet point) and then crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die.
The 300 RUM rifle I load for shoots three-shot clover leaves with this seating depth.

GeedubyaSir,
Some of what I'll say may be a rehash of what others have said, but here's my $.02
Are you a paper puncher or a meat hunter. If your a paper puncher, go get some sierra match kings. If your a meat hunter, just about any bullet properly seated and fed should get you under two inches at 100 yds, triple shocks included at SAAMI OAL's.
Are you shooting a stock "out of the box" rifle or has your been "tricked" (bedded, free floated, decent trigger). You didn't say whether your shooting a sporter weight BDL or a Sendero or VSSFII. A decent bedding job/ free floating the barrel, and trigger job will probably do more to shrink your groups than a difference of .050" in COAL.
Chances are you will be more limited by the length of the magazine than the length of your chamber. Remingtons for the most part seems to have long chambers. The two 300 RUM's I've owned did. If you have equipment to measure max OAL do so, otherwise I'd load to SAAMI book length or .050 longer.
On my larger caliber rifles I don't mess with barrel break in. I run about 300 strokes through the bore (using a coated or graphite cleaning rod and a bore guide) using a jb bore paste/kroil mixture on a couple of bronze bore brushes. Clean up and go shoot.
My go to load for the 300 RUM in two different remington 700's was 168 gr. nosler ballistic tips, 102 gr. Retumbo, Fed. 215M primers, 3.630" OAL. That might not be safe or the "cat's meow" in yours, but it shot sub inch in both my rem 700's.

You might want to call Barnes bullets they use to put in a flyer with the TSX bullets about seating depth start at .050" off the lands and range would be between .030" to .070". I load the TSX in acouple rifles and I'm between .040" to .050 off the lands for my best accuracy.
The E-Tip recommends their bullets .050" to .100" off the lands for optimal accuracy. I'm at .050" off the land with in the one rifle I shoot those bullets in.
