Question from a Scope 'tard
I've never owned a rifle with glass on top. From 30-06 to 458 lott, all mine have been iron sights.

That being said, I am having a custom Ruger no.1 in 30-06 built - and would like to put a scope on it for hunting/rifle league shooting.

What brand/power/price range should I look for?

You can load to match the TDS reticle

http://www.riflescopes.com/products/51734/kahles_4-12x5...izero_riflescope.htm

Load what you want, zeroed at any range

http://www.riflescopes.com/products/200616/burris_3-12x...lect_rifle_scope.htm

You can load the 30-06 to match the Ballistic Plex. Might have too much parallax though.

That Swarovski looks pretty nice. At the 1000 dollar range, is that a premium scope, or a really good one?

What price range do the good-really good scopes run?

This is all you need. Glass as good as Swarovski and less expensive. Jay

Never scrimp on shooting/hunting glass. I like LEup. VXIII. The Zeiss Conuqest is also very good. The Swarav., high end Zeiss, Kahls, etc. are wonderful but very pricey. Get a VXIII in 2.5x8, 3.5x10 or a Zeiss conquest in 3.5x10 & you'll be happy.

I would start at the leupold vxIII line. European glass is very sharp, but the changing reticle size on the variables annoy the crap out of me. 30-06 can benifit from a 2x7 or 3x9 scope depening on where you plan on using it.

I like my Leupolds but I love my Kahles! I´ve tried cheaper models and always come away disappointed. One brand I can recommend is Meopta -great optics for less money. They may be a bit heavier than a Swaro but we´re talking grams. I have one on order, a 3-12x56 with an illuminated dot.

Scope weight will not be a factor - with a 28 inch heavy barrel on ruger No.1 tropical action, I expect total weight around 9.5 - 10 pounds. I'll have to check Meopta out.
