I didn't expect to buy a rifle today, in fact, I was kind of hoping not to run into one I couldn't resist... like this one. 1927 vintage Winchester Model 54, 30-06. Reblued, new stock, bolt handle altered at some point, safety isn't factory but it came with a scope and the factory stock. Very slick little rig, I'm going to set it up with a receiver sight and take it "good weather" hunting. Should be fun.

Very nice. I like the idea of the receiver sight. I don't much like the recoil pad, but could live with it.

I don't like the pad either, but it will be replaced with a red Pachmayr pad here soon.

A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him "Why do you carry a 45?" The Ranger responded, "Because they don't make a 46."

I wouldn't tap it for a receiver sight..its already been tapped for a Redfield short base. Put a low power scope on it, like a Weavery 2.5 or a Leupold 3X...or just use the existing iron sights, they work pretty darn good...

I had a Mod 54 in 30-06 (actually the first 30-06 I ever owned).

It had good blue and original stock but had been tapped for scope with bolt handle turned.

I replaced the scope with a Leupold 2X7 and eventually gave it to my son as his first rifle.
