tom ga hunterdo i need to add a 300wsm to my hunting rotation?
my hunting partner called last night and said we should buy new m70's in 300wsm. the objective is to accurately shoot a 180 gr bullet at 2,850 fps. we both have a number of 30'06, 7remag, & 300 winmag's. so i just do't see dropping $1,250.00 to reinvent the wheel..am i wrong?

If you have a .300 Win Mag already, the only reason to purchase a .300 WSM is just because you want one. And there ain't nothing wrong with that either!!

That pretty well sums it up. If you really want a new rifle, then step up to something like a .338 Win Mag or a .375 H&H Mag. You've got the 7mm/.30 cals pretty well covered. Just a suggestion.

Major Caliberif you have a 30-06 or a 300win mag a 300wsm would be worthless.

tom hollandI for one like to keep the gun manufactors in business so yes on the 300wsm. I plan on using mine for elk and deer this year. Haven't retire any of my other 30 cal I use. If you reload you can step right up to 300winmag velocity. I've shot 150,165 and 180gr over 3000fps, I haven't tried any 200gr yet. I also own a 30-338,30-378wby,300wby,300wim mag,7mag,280 and 270. There is always another spot for something new. Good Luck!

If you reload and like a lighter rifle the .300 WSM is just the ticket. When one compares a M70 in a WSM to the same brand in 300 WM or 300 HH there is an improvement in balance and weight.
The same improvment carries forward for reloading as the WSM's provide quite a bit of capacity and more positive headspacing. Such more positive headspacing can lead to better accuracy potential and longer case life.
It's not that the old belted designs don't go bang. If you have one that shoots well and stays sighted in they keep it of course. But I would not put any more money into one now that there are finally more modern cartridges available.

PerforatorDon't waste your money unless, like me, you collect cartridges in the form of rifles.
You have saturated that spectrum of power and Bob is right on about upping to a .375. I just don't see where you have a "need" for the WSM. Now I on the other hand don't own a .30 cal rifle,(except for a 30-30)and could legally claim the justification to my wife.

fredj338Tom, you don't NEED a new rifle (don't tell the wife), but if you want one, why not. There isn't enough of a diff. between what you have. Now I don't even have a 06, so for me why not?

smallfrytom... drop the generaly useless 7mag and replace it with a 270 winchester like you know you want too
then go out and buy a 375H&H if you dont already have one.

tom ga hunteri hate to admit this but i have multiple quality hunting rigs in all useful calabers from 223 to 35 Wheken/338 win. since i just hunt deer around the farm i really don't need a 375 h&h but have a 375 winchester whuch us a neat tound for a contender carbine. i am just trying to break an addiction to haveing too many rifles..hopefully i will be strong until next wear but if there was a 338wsm. i'd buy 1.
Go for a bigger rifle I reckon !! .375 or a .416 Rigby cz 550 !! even better...I reckon you could talk your mate into a .416 !!

Gonzo FreakPowerThis is getting monotonous, but just like all the rest I have to recommend against the 300WSM.
But, what about a 270WSM? You don't mention a 270Win. If the right deal came along I would go for a 270WSM myself. I expect it would make a nice little deer rig. However, for a nice little deer rig my first choice would be a 260Rem.
Just get one of everything.

Mark R DobrenskiI am too tired to look back but I sem to recall that he has a 7-if that is the case then as far as I am concerned the 270 WSM would be a non issue. To me the 270 WSM will always be a big 7 wanna be...

djpaintlesI think that whenever "need" comes into the gun buying equation most of the fun goes out. If you want one the 300 WSM is an excellent caliber IMHO buy it.....DJ
