Uncataloged Remington? Help.
In one of my many forays through local gun shops, I have a picked up a Remington model 700 that I positively can not identify. I have been through books and search the net furiously and can not find it. It is a blued rifle with a heavy varmint weight free floated barrel in 7mm STW. I first thought it might be a custom shop job, but it has Remington's tupperware injection molded stock found on factory rifles. The serial number has an "E" prefix if that helps anyone ID this gun.

There's not a chance that someone screwed this barrel onto an otherwise factory rifle is there?

AlanC: Remington is notorious for "burping" out many small runs (500 to 1,000 units) of neat Rifles in various/unusual calibers. These rare offerings were not cataloged many times. I own some of these "rare" 700's including a Remington 700 S/S Varminter with heavy stainless 26" barrel in caliber 17 Remington!
It is one of my favorite and best performing Rifles.
I think Winchester made some heavy barrel Rifles in the 7mm STW IIRC as well!
Does the heavy barrel have the Remington name on it anywhere?
Proof marks?
I am startting a search to see if I can answer your question directly but I would not be surprised to learn that Remington did make some Rifles in 7mm STW.
I know that Remington at one time offered their Model 700 in 300 Weatherby and 7mm Weatherby Magnums.
Best of luck with your new Rifle.

Yes. I have one. It was one of the Limited Classic series, and these were in their catalog that year (somewhere from 1987 to 1989 if I remember correctly).

They may also have offered this caliber in their regular 700 BDL line at one time.

Remington did not offer this caliber until 1997. It carried over to 2002. 2003 thru present is offered only in the custom shop. The barrel has Remington factory markings and is not a rebarrel. Here are some pictures:
