9.3x66

Le Baron's of Canada were able to send me 100
cases for the Sako 9.3x66-all the way to Australia in about 1 week during the Christmas mail congestion.I was very impressed!The local
Sako distributer (Beretta Australia) made all sorts of promises but is now 4 monthes late with suppling any cases and no delivery date in sight yet.This is typical over here.Work will
start on the rifle as soon as Bob De Vries gets the bits.

Cool. I bene toying around this the idea back and forth for over a year now, and have yet to "pull the trigger". I just seat bullets in my 9.3x62s to mag length and make use of the bit more powder room...

What action and barrel are you going to use? 12" twist?

I may have a spare pre-64 model 70 action laying around, so perhaps the 9.3x66 project will arise again. I am not really up for the bolt face modications of the 9.3x64, but who knows, maybe...

Answers-the twist is a good question ( I asked the forum's advice a few months ago and got no clear answer) may use 320 Woodleighs as well as the standard 286 gns and this may have a bearing-will take smiths advice.
The reamer is from Pacific Tool and Die,who I think made the reamers for Sako,it is their "Standard"-in other words I think it is the 85

Wombat,
I have been up for way too long this week. When I get some shut-eye I will e-mail you my chamber print and a recommendation on the rate of twist. How long is that 320 grain Woodleigh bullet in either inches or mm.

How long is your magazine box in either inches or mm. (I'm starting to think in metric these days).

You are using a M-98 action, IIRC?

Lawndart,
320 gn Woodies are 1.4 inches long-this is the solids.
The action will be a 98,the smith is aware he will need to add a bit of length to the box.Loaded dummy rounds went a hair under 87 mm

Lawndart, is there any way I could get a chamber print of the 9.3x66. I have been following all I can on this new caliber, but can not find any specs on it. Elsewhere on this forum it was stated that a 9.3x66 could be had by " pushing a standard 9.3x62 reamer a bit further in " I'm no gunsmith but I find this hard to believe

Not in my rifle.
The 9.3x62 is a tapered case. If you run the reamer in far enough to move the shoulder 4mm you will continue to enlarge the case to the rear. End up with a large amount of poorly supported brass.

Call Dave Kiff at Pacific tool and die - he will fax you a copy of their 9.3x66 reamer...

I'll do the twist calculation tomorrow. Clinic will run very late tonight, I'm afraid.

The fellow who invented the 9,3x66 really did just run his 9,3x62 reamer in an extra 4mm the first time. I think I'll stick with my purpose made reamer though

Thanks Lawndart, One of the other Aussies mentioned that a local supplier received a shipment of cases. I'll try to grab a few of those and measure 'em up
