I'm impressed with the folks that can answer with just one cartridge chambering...

I have a tough time finding one I don't like to shoot...

I answered .270 and it isn't because I don't like or use the other calibers to choose from. I picked that caliber because it works for all the hunting I want to do. I could have chose from the many others but the .270 was my first love. I may have wandered every now and then but I keep coming back to the .270 Win.

This is alot harder than I thought. I can narrow it down to 2 medium bores that would make me happy for the rest of my life. 30-06 and/or the 35 Whelen.

The choice is simple: 30-06
Versatility: Big enough for all NA game and yet can be reloaded for the small stuff, too. No other rifle has such a wide range of commercially available ammo. For those who reload, the bullet and powder choices are enormous. If a backwoods store has any ammo for sale at all, it will have 30-30 and '06 ammo. Although I'd hate to have to choose only one, the versatility of the '06 makes its choice compelling.

35 Whelen. Light rifle, hits hard, accurate, easy to load for, lots of bullets....aaggghhhh thats goes for all the others as well I guess

Chalk up another vote for 7mm-08 Rem. Mine, in Rem. 700 SPs DM, dropped two deer this fall (we have a doe season). Plus, pussycat-like recoil and huge bullet availability are great too.

I like several ... 6mm Rem, 308 Win, 30-06, 338-06, and the 9,3x62.

Up to 200 yards or so my favorite would have to be the 9,3x62. Have taken White Tails, Impala, Warthog, Blue Wildebeast, Kudu, Zebra, and US feral pigs with it. Only animal that was not a "dead right there (DRT)" was the Kudu who obviously had not read "The Perfect Shot."

Incredible to see an 800 pound Zebra drop straight down on its knees, or a 200+ pound pig literally knocked over in its tracks.

Just an amazingly effective cartridge while destroying little edible meat!

No contest for best all around: .30-06.

But for regular hunting of bigger or DG: 9.3x62mm.

Farmer John: You forgot crows! Man is the 9.3x62 lethal on crows...works well on red fox and eland too!

.270 Winchester if you handload, 30/06 if you don't.

Todays modern bullets have made the .270 Winchester an almost perfect caliber for North America. I see no difference between a 180 grain bullet that loses almost half its weight upon expansion vs. a modern 140 grain bullet that retains nearly 100% of its weight. If handloading, I find the .270 to be a superior round to the 30/06. The 30/06 shooting a 180 grain bullet at 2750 fps is no impressive number at all. One can load a 140 grain Barnes TSX over 3000 fps in the .270 Win with accuracy and that combination has great SD, BC and is flying nearly 300 fps faster than the 180 gr. 30/06. 300 fps is a significant velocity difference and that load in the .270 Win is an exceptionally deadly round out to 350 yards.

There is alot of hype on magnum calibers but unless one gets into 3200-3300 velocity range with a 180 grain bullet, I see no use in punishing the shoulder and nerves with the brutal recoil of something like a .300 Weatherby. Besides, how many rifleman are truly capable to shoot their high recoiling guns well enough to take a 400+ yard shot? I am not talking about the 10 pound, bull barrelled gun sporting a tri-pod and 20X computer scope that long range shooters use. I am talking about your typical sporting rifle or mountain rifle chambered in a .300 magnum or .338 magnum. The latter having about 3 times the perceived recoil of a .270 and the .300 magnum having an extremely spine chilling, snappy kick.

The RUMs , 338 rum, the 300 RUM NEITHER one of them has that ring on THose shells but I guess they concider them Magnums So I would vote for the 30/06.

Of course I am going to say 270win ! Its the best !

Just one, hmm. Either the 7x57, or a 7mm Mauser, or possibly the old 275 Rigby. Since I have none of the above, it would be a .30-06 and a 180 grain bullet.

My every day rifle for deer in Missouri is a 7-08 but I enjoy my .308,.270 win and my 30-06 just as well but the 30-06 is the most versatile of the lot hands down.

7x57mm. enough said.

Two years ago I would have said 7x57. I have been a tear with the 25-06 and like it a bit more for use in my area.

400 Whelen (improved version).

You can literally hunt anything with it.

In the medium bore category, my 35 Whelen, also the improved version (40 degree shoulder).

My current top of my list is the 9.3x62 However the 7x64,6.5x55,and any cartridge based on and including the 308 will always be in my reach.
