Figure on another 25-26 fps per inch, so your usual velocity in a full-length barrel would be in the neighborhood of 2400, well within the range of the venerable .318 WR. A 250 gr standard bullet at that speed will drive clear through most game lengthwise. Even at the reduced velocity of your bush gun it will still make most bears take notice. Maybe not that monster that someone sent me photos of but most of them, anyway. I'm not excited about your group, though. Have you free-floated the barrel?

I just got back from the range after running 10 rounds through my .338-06, it's a semi-custom Ruger RSI M77 (old style with tang safety) with a 18.5 in. barrel, scope is Leupold 1.5-5 Vari-X III. The loads were 59gr of IMR 4350 behind a 250gr Sierra Game King. At 100yds I got a 2 1/2 x 3 in. group from the bench resting on a rolled up jacket. Main question is, I got a range of velocity from 2260fps to 2305fps, how does this compare with what others are getting for results in velocity? According to the loading info the velocity is a little low, probably due to short barrel right?

John-for what it is worth in my 338/06 I use the same load of IMR 4350. And with a 23" Chanlin tube and using a 250 SAF I get 2590 fps.

I kind of think that your tube is running a bit slow for what that is worth.

You might look up a product called Gun Juice. It's a dry lubricant that you wipe down the bore and fix by firing. A few shots can add up to 100-150 ft sec. If you can't find any references, email me. I have the source.

I supect that with a little tweaking I should be able to get the group smaller, wasn't paying a lot of attention to accuracy as I was to not shooting my Chrony. The barrel is capped at the end of the full stock typical of the RSI, might this have something to do with accuracy? I've taken a number of Blacktails with it and it does work quite well in putting them down so I don't have to worry about looking for them in an alder thicket (that a toothed fuzzy thing might be in and laid claim to the deer). Good to see that the velocity is within the range that would be normal if it had a longer barrel. I sure do like this gun, quick handling and light with enough punch to do the job.

I think you need to go to IMR-4320 powder and pick the velocity up a bunch...and your accuracy is not up to snuff IMO...I would think you should be getting at least 1.5" for 3 at 100...

Hey Sea, I'm always willing to try new stuff, I'm a tinkerer @ heart. My .338-06 is very finicky, like most women I guess. RL15 & IMR4064 or 4329 for the 210grNP & RL19 or IMR4350 for the 250grGS or Interloks.
