I just sent off the change for a Mossberg 100 ATR in 308. anyone shoot one of these puppies yet.
i got the wood stocked version w/ a simmons 3-9x40 scope installed. Hard to beat a $325 shipped bolt gun. If for nothing more than testing max loads...

you'd think a $300 bolt gun would get bought and tried, at least.

KS,all in all not a bad rifle. Before shooting it check the tightness of the pins that hold the bolthead on the body. Keep an eye on them .

I shot a pals--- it has a 14 pound trigger pull. He had a smith work on it, now its 6---still too high for me

It's one of those rifles that you don't need to handle to know it's junk. YMMV may vary though.

I'd sure rather spend another $100 and get an old Higgins FN Mauser for my dollar.

over here they only sell them as a package with a mossberg scope?? for 5000, a weatherby vanguard + leupold vx1 cost 6200.
so i have already set my mind on a vanguard.

Elitist? Well ok, whatever. I suspect a lot of us just don't feel the need anymore to run out and buy the latest greatest "cheap rifle," that come along.

I've already been thru the phase where I had to own every firearm ever made at anytime anywhere. In the last couple of years I've been getting rid of the guns I just don't have a use for and keeping and buying the firearms I think have or add value to my usage and collection.

A Mossberg rifle? Come on man, If that doesn't scream "Walmart brand made in China by the tens of millions." I don't know what does.

I haven't even handled the Mossberg yet. Although I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of "value rifles". Since my battery consists of a Walmart Model 70 Super Shadow in .270WSM, a Howa 1500 in 6.5x55, a Stevens 200 in .243 Win, a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .223 and a new Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special in .223, I could hardly be called an elitist. (all purchased new, the most expensive was $479.95 the Weatherby (Howa) from Sportsman's Warehouse). I admit to having considered one of the new Marlin XL-7 bolt guns, since they look a lot like a Savage and my Stevens 200 is a real shooter. I am very curious to see how good their copy of the Accu-Trigger is. But if I really need an accurate, inexpensive rifle, the Stevens 200 is a known commodity. And, if you up the ante a bit, you are quickly in range of the Howa and Weatherby Vanguard. Hope the ATR works out for you.

I have to agree with 2ndtimer. My Stevens 200 in .223 is a real shooter and my Vanguard in .257 Wby Magnum is a tack driver. However, nobody I know, personally, has the Mossberg. If they all have the trigger weight that buckeyeshooter described, it will be hard to be very accurate with that weight trigger.

The 4X4 Mossberg has the same action and has tested very well, and accurate. It's probably as good as any other cheap gun.

I haven't shot a Mossberg ATR and have no plans to do so. I have shot its Grandfather, the Raptor, and it wasn't a very good rifle. I'm sure that Mossberg will sell some ATRs, since they will be the cheapest CF rifle in Wal-Mart's gun racks. I think that the Marlin XR-7s and Stevens 200s are better designs. I have a couple of Stevens 200s and am planning to spend a little $$ on an XR-7 in 25-06 when they are available. The XR-7 in 270 that I have shot was as accurate, untuned and with Federal factory loads, as my Stevens 200s in 223 and 7mm-08, plus the XR-7 is better looking than the Stevens 200.

I have a Remington 710 in 30-06 that I bought for $210 in 2004 just because I couldn't pass on a new rifle for $210. It is heavy, but it shoots good enough groups with factory ammo to take hunting. I have loaned it to a couple of guys in my old hunting group who were having trouble hitting deer with their rifles and they were able to fill their tags with it. No matter how bad the Remington 710 may be, I'd opt for it in lieu of a Mossberg ATR 24/7/365.

I bought one of these, a couple of months ago, mostly cause I liked the light weight. Seems like a very well built rifle on tried and true principles. Twin Mauser type locking lugs, rebated muzzle and head spacing on the Savage model. Very heavy on Plasic. Only thing I'm not happy with is the heavy trigger pull, though it does seem to break cleanly. any ideas where can I get a spare mag for it? Haven't had time to sight it in thoroughly, so I can't comment on accuracy.

I don't mean to offend anyone and I am not an elitist - or perhaps I am, but I know I am a "pride of ownership" kind of guy and most if not all rifles at that price point don't impress me, especially the NEA single shots. Sorry, if that's what you can afford, save a little longer and buy something that you can be proud of. If you're looking for simple utlity and nothing more, buy one.

Anybody buying a rifle that goes 300 brand new is not looking at pride of ownership issues.
