I have no personal experience with the 270 WBY. But, it’s ballistic capability is admirable. I have never been a big fan of 270 cartridges. I have either preferred smaller or larger diameters. I do respect the 270 Winchester, 270 WSM, and 270 WBY capabilities.

Though more recently I have came up with a 270 Winchester and 270 WSM. My personal likes in the smaller bores are 7mm’s. The distances that I shoot perceived performances would be of no consequence.

I find the Weatherby cartridges interesting. When a kid, I was fascinated by the Weatherby advertisements. I only own one WBY chambered rifle, a M70 Classic in 300 WBY. Thoughts of having 340 put together in a M70 still nag at me.

I would be more inclined to the 7mm WBY than the 270 version. I am sure in real-life, there is very little performance difference with similar type bullets. I am not a long range shooter.

I bought a McWhorter .270 Wby. in 2011, at the recommendation Alan Rovig. He probably had a bunch of .277 barrels! I have used it exclusively for Aoudad and Coues deer since that time. Alan worked up a load for 140 Nosler Accubonds and 150 grain Bergers. I have never shot game with anything but the 140 Accubonds, no reason to experiment or change. I could rattle on but let's just say I am totally satisfied with that caliber for open country hunting for medium size game. It is a .270 Winchester on steroids.

I have a couple. Use the right bullet, place it close, and it works.

I totally get the 7mm angle. More versatile. More bullet choices. I just keep coming back to the 270! I have a donor action and a mcmillan stock. Recoil should be reasonable. I grew up shooting a 270 win so I am biased. I would likely go with a 140 or 150 accubond and never look back.

One of my favorite cartridges. I have two. One built on a VZ-24 action and the other on a M1999 built by Brockman.

Personally, I don’t like belted cases.

The 270 caliber, however, is one of my favorites.

I have built a number of rifles on various 270 wildcats we have developed.

And have used several of these rifles in Africa for many years.

Shooting animals up to eland with them.

I probably shot several hundred various animals with these.

Worked absolutely great.

Its one of the overlooked gems of the gunworld, about as flat shooting as anything out there, and many wildcats that equal it does get the job done, and Ive witnessed its performance many times and was impressed with the quick kills...

Ideal for various Antelope and sheep in such places as Namibia or the high mountain country where shots are alleged to be long, and that may or maynot be, its supposed my many however.

Ive never owned one, because the std. 270 WCF suited me fine over the years, as it has a 22" barrel and weighs 8 Lbs scoped and ready to go and has killed everything Ive pulled the trigger on!

The .270 Wby Mag is an excellent cartridge. You can count on it to do everything the .270 Win will do ;-)

A .270 Weatherby is good for about 250 FPS over a .270 Winchester, bullet for bullet. Whether the difference is worthwhile, only the shooter can decide. The Weatherby round does need a longer barrel to really perform. I like them both very much.

I bought a MK 5 featherweight 270 WM probably 15-20 yrs ago. I could not get it to shoot under 4" for anything. Tried different bullets, seating depth, powders. Sent it back to two authorized service depth and they said there was nothing wrong with it. I changed scopes thinking that might be the problem (It was not) Just about put in the back of the safe forever.
I finally reached Weatherby directly and they agreed to take a look at it at the factory.
After returning it to me they suggested using 130 Gr. Barnes TTSX bullets.
I put some loads together and WOW (5 shots into a nickel).
I called Weatherby and asked them (What did you do to that gun: I know it was not just the bullets). They said that gun was very particular to the torque on that action screws and provided the torque settings.
I have a 12 oz scope on that gun and the way it shoots I cannot think of a better above timber line sheep or goat gun.
I now shoot a 129 Barnes LRX in that gun approaching 3500 FPS. A Laser to 500 yrs. Doubt I would shoot beyond that.

It is a fantastic round. Like most of the cartridges around now it will kill most anything in North America with the proper bullet and shot placement. The velocity does help beat the wind and recoil is very mild considering the potential of this round. About as close to perfect as I can imagine.

I had one briefly and it shot wonderfully tight groups and had eye-candy for a stock but it had to go down the road for airfare on a sheep hunt.
I've sacrificed many a good rifle for those curly-horned mountain-mutton!
My second love is rifles and my first love is wild sheep.... My wife, kids and grandkids fit in there somewhere too. LOL

I've got a couple; one a Mark V Accumark and the other a custom build on a Rem 700.

The first one seemed to be picky about bullets and loads but was plenty good enough with 130 grain TSXs. Eventually, I got around to bedding it and now it shoots everything I can close the bolt on. Can't help thinking I should have done that first. I mostly use 140 NBTs and Accubonds in it now and have peppered up a few corners of New Zealand with the rifle. It is very capable for 0-700 yards with just a B&C reticle.

I would choose the 7mm Weatherby over the 270

I like what I am hearing! Time to order a barrel...
