I am looking at buying a .30-378 WM. I have not found much published in magazines about it even though it appears to be quite popular. I currently own and hunt with 6 Weatherbys ranging from .257 to a .460 and am looking to add this one to the rest of the family. Can any users give me some tips on bullets used, preferred weights, performance on game, likes and dislikes about caliber. Anything would be useful and appreciated.

Every one I've seen has a muzzle break and they are ferociously loud!

I own 4 Weatherbys in 30-378, a synthetic and 3 Accumarks. I have used them pimarily in Africa but you could shoot anything in the US with them. I have only used 180gr bullets because I thought the was the ideal weight/velocity for the caliber. I used Swift A-Frames in Africa for everything up to Zebra and Gemsbuck and have not recovered any. I broke both shoulders in a Gemsbuck at 350yds in Namibia. I shoot A-Frames in one, Barnes TSX in the synthetic and Sierra Pro Hunters in the other 2 Accumarks. I got the best accuracy and velocity using RL22 (100.5gr to 101.5gr) depending on bullet and rifle with velocity running 3400 to 3450fps.

So much is the difference between a 300 Weatherby 30-378 Weatherby Magnum and a Magnum?

ovny: If you are asking the differences in the 300 Mag's in size, here is their case capcity in grains of water(case filled to top of neck with water)
300 WSM 78
300 H&h 85
300 Win Mag 87
300 Weatherby 98
300 Rem Ultra Mag 109
30-378 Weatherby Mag 127gr.

Two or three years ago I was told by people at Weatherby that the .30-.378 was one of their top sellers in the Mk V rifle and in ammunition sales. Not sure if this is still the case.

Errol Lambrechts, my PH at Gras Ranch in 2008, said quite a few of his hunters showed up with .30-.378 rifles, generally citing the flat trajectory as the reason. The Gras Ranch is big open country so shots at 300+ yards are not uncommon.

Never shot a head of game with the cartridge but Errol told me he'd been impressed with the results he'd seen in the field.

To me it is a waste. Looking at the Wby site with a 300yd zero and 180gr bullet the 30-378 is a whole 2" flatter at 500yds.

That takes a larger action and about 30% more powder. The recoil is way to much for many to shoot well.

It is really about 4" difference because when both are zeroed at 300 yards the mid range trajectory is higher for the 300 Wby. So put the 30-378 at the same height at 100 yards as the 300.

Actions are the same size.

I pulled all the data from the Hodgdon loads for 150, 165, 180 and 200 grainers.

The average velocities of the 4 bullet weights and for all listed maximum loads, that is all listed powders.

The average for all 4 bullet weights with load/powder that gave highest velocity

I can see that the difference between 300 Weatherby Magnum and 30-378 Weatherby Magnum is notable. But I will get a 300 Weatherby Magnum and I think that is enough powerful for all I want or I can hunt in my country.
