To interject, Paolo9,5x73, likewise, howdy neighbor to you. I spent many years in said hamlet, and still return there frequently. The gazebo at yon Spiderville lake is a wonderful place to introduce youngsters to fishing. A couple of Donald Duck fishing poles, some worms from Greentop (or some place closer) and you have the makings of a great afternoon.

I don't have a 338-06 but I do have the 9.3x62 and the two rounds have some smililarities. They both lend themselvest to a reasonibly-sized rifle, that is easily portable yet still has modest recoil, can pack five down, one in the spout, has killing power a-plently...there's a lot to like. Then again, that Virginia resident black bear I shot with it didn't like it at all.

DWright, I think you made a good decision to get the tires. Back when I had a Jeep I had good luck with Michelins, for what it's worth.

Wismon,
I wouldn't compare the 9.3x62 to a 338-06..I would be more inclined to comparet the 9.3x62 to the great .375 H&H..I can also get 2500 FPS in my .338 Win. with 300 gr. Woodleighs.

I load mine with RL-15 and get 2400 FPS with a 320 gr. Woodleigh soft or solid..My .375 gets 2500 FPS with a 300 gr. Woodleigh..I get 2520 FPS with a 286 gr. bullet in my 9.3x62 and 2700 plus with a 230 gr. GS Custom HV. My barrel is 26 inches btw..

The 338-06 or 35 Whelen are great rounds but not in the same class with these rounds IMO.

Perhaps with factory ammo they compare a bit.

DWright,
I would opt for a Rimrock stock, they have a good feel and look about them..They were designed by Custom stock maker Jim Coffin, have checkering and look right..

I already have more rifles than I need. I have a custom .338-06 AI, and here I'm thinking of runnin down to one of the local gun shops and grabbing a used Ruger Hawkeye stainless in .338 WM, just because it's cheap! What the hell. Can anyone tell me WHY I need it? No, I don't currently own a .338 WM, but does anyone think it will do anything my .338-06 won't? It just means more damn dies, more cases, another scope. . . on & on. Should be saving it for Jeep tires!

Its just like asking whether the 30-06 will do the same thing the 300 Win Mag will?

Yes, but not as far out...

I think we are dealing with the wrong question here. Big Grin

The real question is if you can have or already own a 338 WM, why in heck would you want a 338-06, AI or standard? Wink Personally, I think the same question applies to any of the 300 magnums, or 8mm magnums. Get a 338 WM, go hunting, and be happy.

Dr K, have have nothing against you, but when you stated that 'I should get a life, or just get on with it' that was taken as an insult! I was simply making conversation with all and stirring up ideas; Thats all. I have about 20 pounds on you BTW and would not intentionally pick on someone smaller than myself without reason. But if you were in the service I salute you, and thank you for your service! Navy here. So if you meant no insult, I will resend my comments. Fair enough?

I've always been a big fan of the .338-06, as well as both the 8m/m-06 and the Ackley versions of either one.

Yet, I now still have a .338 Win Mag, and no longer have any of the stretched-mouth .32 or .33 '06s. Mine is a Sako Safari-Grade.338 Mag, and it does not kick at all severely, is nice eye-candy, and is very accurate for a hunting rifle, even with plain vanilla Winchester factory ammo.

So, for all the reasons Ray listed, I think I'll just keep on keepin' on with the Win Mag. Can't think of ANY reason not to.

Fair enough DWright .

I can be a condescending arrogant ass , how ever that was not my real intent .

You stated you had to many rifles , didn't see any advantage of the 338 WM over the 338/06 .

I personally didn't see any huge advantage .

You needed Jeep tires right ?. So I should have said purchase the Jeep tires and get on with life .

I didn't though so that's MY FAULT and I'm sorry .
It wasn't meant to be an insult .I just failed to see the question aspect . I need Jeep tires and Rims for my 69 CJ 5 , so I'm getting on with my life .

Anchors Away .Thank You for your service as well .

Dr, K; point well taken. And I agree; I don't think with the bullets I will be shooting that I, or I should say 'the game' will know any difference. It's just one of those things about "another rifle" that starts to sound appealing I guess. I really enjoy the medium bore sizes and find them the most usefull for our hunting here in the west. And of course there's the idea of the .338 for the open, then the stainlees/synthetic, short barreled, low powered scoped .338 for the rainy season, and so it goes. Good shootin!

DWright ; Lets face facts . Your a hunter and paper puncher to correct ?. What you already own works for your purposes correct again ?.

Jeep tires are MORE IMPORTANT , least wise to me , I need to get there and back , nothing worse than walking out leaving a perfectly good vehicle with a BUM TIRE or broken what ever .
Are you carrying that Elk out ?. I'm not !.

Every time I see a new or used weapon .I don't already own . I try to talk myself into purchasing it . When I return home look into the vault plus two safes , I regain what little sense I still possess , then ask myself what I haven't shot lately ( dozens jump out at me ) then where will I put it ?.

My wife came up with a spectacular solution for me .

Go through the vault , safes where ever and decide on what HAS TO GO !. It HAS TO GO !. To make room for that new one . So I reluctantly do just that , if I REALLY WANT THE NEW ONE !.

I some times ask myself Why some of these older weapons are far better made nicer to look at and with a bolt facing lug truing and new barrel they are every bit as good if not better than a lot of the newer stuff !.

Besides I like employing Gun Smiths they need money to and their becoming rare breeds now days . Least wise in my neck of the concrete jungle .

So I don't own every caliber or manufactures version of what ever so what !. What I do own works for me and if it doesn't ?.

Theres alway a NEW ONE that might !??.

Well, I like your way of thinking! I'm getting to where I need another safe, OR as you said, to sell one for a spot for the new one. Or just shoot what I have. The only thing I'm not set up for at the moment would be an Elephant charge, but not a lot of Elephants in these woods anyway. And I also agree about making the ones you have better for what your gunna do with them, as opposed to a off the shelf factory job. I don't own a forearm that I havn't re-done in some way to my liking. Thanks for the come back Dr. K. Nice talking with you!

I live in SpringTucky off of Jasper road. Hear youin's is havin' a Cougar out break in Oakridge? Got a good friend who does some volunteer work for Fish&Game.

He said that Eastern Lane has a Cougar sighting and incident map. The Oakridge area is overloaded with stick pins.

"Isn't it pretty to think so."
